It's really not that raw-sounding a record.

You're obviously on a bit of a wind up here, anyway. :D

I rest my case: *cough* :p

Just because it's not "raw sounding" in your view don't mean it's not punk.

I've never said that it's not a punk record though, have I? I'm the one who argued that things don't actually have to musically sound stereotypically 'punk'. All I and others have said is that Roadrunner wasn't, as you've suggested, 'the first'.

You've contradicted your own post that I linked to, where you quite clearly list other earlier records which you consider to be 'punk' (The Sonics, The Velvets, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds).

You're being deliberately obtuse here, but hey, keep digging that hole if you will. My work here is done. :p :)

Well they are punk. Doesn't take anything away from what I said about JR&ML's song Roadrunner being punk does it?

Here's some raw punk. Who is the vocalist in this classic from the Killjoys?

I'm going to see Jonathan Richman on Sunday night. I've wanted to see him live ever since Roadrunner in the mid 70's :D

I think youngsters don't really understand how different this song sounded in say 1976.

I remember first hearing it the first time I went to Erics, which had just opened ...

he's still a great performer. And he'll do a mean Roadrunner. Without pretending it was the first punk song, which it obviously wasn't.

New research has confirmed that 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' by the Beach Boys was the first ever thrash metal song.

The first reggae song was J.S. Bach's 2nd Brandenburg concerto.

He was amazing on Sunday night. He did some old songs and all of Oh Moon but he mixed songs/lyrics and everyone loved him. Same voice, same impression that he has such a sense of wonderment at the world, naive charm and all that.
I was listening to him in car yesterday and I'll be listening again today probably ...

And should, perchance, Roadrunner come on, you will not think to yourself, "Oh, I know - it's the first ever punk song".

Because you're not fucking stupid.

No, but I will think as I always do, that when I heard it the first time I loved it but also I kept thinking I must have misheard some of the lyrics because I wasn't used to hearing phrases like "faster miles an hour" :D

Slightly off subject, but the article quoted in the OP is from a column in the gruniad by Laura Barton. Which has now been discontinued due to them downsizing the film&music bit. which is sad. as she wrote beautifully (imo). in fact she's my favourite contemporary music journo. looks like she's been moved on to more prosaic things at the paper.

but, but, but.....

The Sex Pistols covered it! SO it must be punk rock. Just like the Monkee's. And The Who. And The Stooges.
