Rising fuel Can you get through the next few months without heating?

Beer jacket - you know, the invisible thing you wear home from the pub and stops you from freezing to death in the depths of winter even when you are only wearing a t-shirt.

Doesn't always work up here. Think at least one really drunk person dies every winter up here(in this area). Fall asleep before getting home and never wake up.

We had one who made the Darwin Awards. He was out on his 3rd floor balcony. He was also naked, drunk, and juggling. He missed a throw, leaned over too far, broke the railing, and toppled three stories below into the snow.

That's because the beer jacket makes you feel warmer, but actually lowers your temperature.

I cracked 2 nights ago & put the big storage heater on, for the first time since i moved 4 years ago.

the meters eaten best part of £2 overnight  :(

thats just ONE heater being charged. there is a second, lower input setting which ill try tonight before giving up... if i can.

Yeah, we cracked a while ago. Had it been mild, like the last few years, we'd have done it. As it is, it's been fucking freezing!

I have had a few days without heating now, because my boiler broke.

I am sick of being cold. There is so little I can do to warm up. Even sitting by the fire doesn't work, because one side of me burns and the other freezes. I would need to be on some kind of rotating spit.

Wearing all extra clothes works, but I feel stuffy all the time.

I am sick of being cold.

Being perpetually cold will turn you a little mad if it goes on too long. I'm at the junction right now :hmm:

I have a trailers load of wood in the shed- fifty quid for 3-4 months worth of cut to measure pine.

dont forget to tuck trowsers into socks. And tops into trowsers. I think ive been an idiot by wearing 5+ tops, 2 hats etc but only one trowsers - so all the heats been escaping through my legs :o

my tip is stock up on full-face balaclavas while their still legal :hmm: then next year when the inevitable food & fuel rioting kicks off well be able to nip out and put a few hours in without the annoyance of having to get changed first. its not all bad :)

.

I had that happen to me at the start of the cold weather, just two days without the boiler working nearly cracked me up, even when it got fixed I spend the next week fretting about it breaking down again - luckily it did'nt.

Had my gas bill in this morning, it was £97 - that's about £25 higher than it normally is at this time of the year, I'm going to pay it all off in one go - get it over with, which means I'll be skinted all through Jan (but at least I'll be warm:D)

carefull you lot with yer heating off , can cause massive problems with damp .has anyone ever had the missfortune of burst pipes ???i did , my heatings on lowish mornings and night

We're going to be burning (a lot) more wood right enough coz I can get that free. Coal has gone up 4 times in that many months :(

And the last time the coalman was round he said he wasn't due a delivery til mid Jan and had hardly any coal left :(

Fortunately I found a supplier of peat about 16 miles away. I can get 3 bags of that for the price of a bag of coal.
The temperature hasn't been above 16C in here since November now.

PS I know alcohol lowers your temp sam :) That's why I don't drink/go out at NY ;)

Dillinger you need thermals young man. Atm I am wearing two layers of fleece on my legs, a layer of fleece and a lambswool jumper on top and still my hands are cold  I may put a scarf on soon.

We just had the bill in for last years heating and we have to pay 200 quid more now. But it's fuel we've used already so economising won't help that. My usually spendthrift flatmate is actually being quite good with draught blockers, keeping his bedroom door closed (the coldest room) and wearing clothes around the house. We try and heat only where we are. But you need to keep the heating ticking over at a minimal level at least and turning it off is not really an option, its -7°C tonight and will get colder the next few weeks.

I am considering thermals.

Even when my boiler was working, I would just put on more jumpers before I would consider putting it on. And then only put it on a little tiny bit. But wrapping up just doesn't seem to be working anymore. I am either cold all the time, or feeling really stuffy.

I wore a scarf to bed last night.

Surely that's a bit dangerous? :hmm:

lag the pipes ;)

I've heard that said.
I suppose it makes a difference how many people live in a house / flat and how much time they spend cooking and washing.

I live in a 150 year old peasant hovel with one gas fire which I'm currently only heating at all over weekends.

As I do up the outside walls I will be lagging and drywalling.
For now I rely on ventilation. :)

I've still been using central heating, but I've re-insulated the loft, put that double-glazing film over our single glazed window and stuffed our draughty fireplace with as much newspaper as I can. I've got some foil stuff to put behind some of the radiators as well, although I haven't got round to that yet.

Predicting low temperatures of -6C in London this week!

The best £20 I've ever spent:

And it's energy efficient

OUr heating and hot water is all in with our rent.

It was shitter for the year and bit that it didn't work and we had to pay out for electric heaters but its fixed now! :)

I don't use my boiler for heating cos it makes lots of scary noises and I fear it'll blow up at any moment. So I only use it for hot water. I've got a couple of little oil filled, electric radiators instead. Which have the added advantage that they're thermostat controlled (the boiler only has a timer), and I can turn them off when I'm not in the room.

idioteque posting

My university house is really, really cold. My flatmate is impervious to cold (and has the smallest and warmest bedroom) and gets annoyed when I turn the heating on even when I have loads of jumpers and stuff on, so I have resorted to getting a portable heater thing, which I've just found out is apparently quite expensive to run. My house gets so cold though, we had a man come round recently to check how energy efficient it is so maybe when he inevitably tells the landlord that it's crap he'll come and sort out the chimneys and stuff.

I would never get out of bed :D

i was under the impression that you are only meant to put the blanket on for half an hour before you go to bed and switch it off before you get in....

Idioteque have you got one of those supersoft dressing gowns that are around now? They are very cosy. Combine it with a laptop on my lap and i'm usually too hot, even if my heating is off. Also switch the heating on so it is cosy when you get out of it, have a hot bath then get into your cosy clothes and don't stay still for too long.

Miserable though innit? I hate being cold indoors. Feels like i'll never be warm again. I refuse to be cold in my own home - fuck heating cost increases.
