Rise Festival - Saturday 8th July - Finsbury Park

random local point: no victoria line from Highbury to Seven Sisters, so those coming up from Brixton and other places south would be advised to change to the Piccadilly Line at, say, Kings Cross.

(I thought: how *clever* of London Underground: close half the tube lines going to and from a big festival!)
arsebiscuits...

If you're English, Welsh or Scottish then heavy drinking is seedy, depressing and wrong. But if you're Irish it's somehow artistic and glamorous. Alcohol is what drives your burning Celtic soul. It helps you write poetry and informs your heartfelt political convictions. When we drink, we all pretend to be Irish in a bid to stave off the nagging emptiness in our souls

Then your taste buds have been fooled.. it is the very worst sort of chemical shite masquerading as cider.
Where's the proof then sunshine. Just cos you linked to an article by Sam Delaney, that doesn't prove shite.

links or I'm starting a petition to have you tarred and feathered, whilst in a k hole.

Just realised that all that kicking off about Magners was in response to a throwaway/tongue in cheek (well, partly!) comment that I made, oh well!! :p

Looks at way thread is developing..

"A Commercial, Sweetened, Filtered and Pasteurized Cider that is probably one of the worst I have ever had. Don’t even try to compare this to Real Cider. The brand is purely intended to promote an “Irishness” for Overseas imbibers and markets, and it is over-sweetened to appeal to today’s yoof market no doubt, which is fine, that’s business. But it is still a very poor Cider, so bad that not even the marketing hype can speak up for, and rescue, it. I tried this in a pretty good Irish Bar called Limericks down on Naples Island in Long Beach, CA. I noted that not many buy this ‘neat’, it is more often than not mixed with the cold Guinness half-n-half to make a ‘Black Satin’. That and cooking is probably the best use for it in my opinion."

<legs its>

Magners sucks. It's corporate cod Oirish cider and a triumph of marketing over taste. Support independent cider makers, not this industrially produced, over-hyped, multi-national travesty!

<gets off soap box. has lie a bit of a lie down>

Is Magners the new Guinness?

(not in terms of taste, just in terms of marketing hell)

How long before St. Patrick's day is sponsered by Magners?

* puts tongue firmly in cheek *

But nobody is actually linking to anything worthy of the posts slating it. All beer/cider has sugar in it.

But where's this hard evidence.

Ed', you drink Stella ffs.

I don't like cider as a rule, but do like Magners. Especially if i want a drink and don't want to get trashed. I couldn't give a fuck about the hype - I tasted some before I'd ever noticed the advertising - and sometimes it's just the job.

It really is no more complicated than that.

maybe in this country such a gimmick may kick off. But St Patrick's day is a bit more than that for us actual Irish. Regardless of any ad campaigns etc...

I celebrate it as I always have, and always will. I don;t need no corporate slogans or the like to know why I do.

Don't believe the hype.

The English are so lost.

What a great ad'!!

actually, i think Magners is an example of a company reacting to its market rather than the usual vice versa - drinkers in Ireland started putting ice in their glasses when drinking the stuff and it caught on. The brewers then realised they were onto something, rather than the other way round...

^^^ see my edit Tone Malone, I know full well that St. Patrick's day is an excuse to drink ANY drink, not just one particular brand! :p

(this deep knowledge comes from having spent many years in the company of fully fledged Irish men :) )

Too late I replied to what I read.

e2a: and anyway, Patrick's day is Feb 14th. March 17th is the Irish New Year.

I was in the Cutty Sark in Greenwich the other night. Some lad came up to the bar and asked for a Magners. On being told they didn't have any he looked around and went for a Carling ... despite the fact there was a proper draught cider (Addlestone's, IIRC) staring him the face. Obviously, he couldn't drink that 'cos it's not branded innit.

On-topic, I'm half tempted to go to this. I'm not heading for hull til Sunday, after all. is there a meet-up planned, or are people just drifting along as and when?

:)

is St Patricks Day the same day as Valentine's day then? I've never noticed! or is that the actual proper saint's day i guess.

oh do fuck off!! :p

I don't LIKE cider. I do LIKE Magners. So if I fancy a Magners and they don't have any, I'll drink something other than cider.

Am I a witless victim of corporate brainwashing or somebody who knows what they like to drink?

Highminded bollocks, roadie, if you don't mind me saying so :p

It just seemed a bit of an insight into how well a big branding exercise can work. It wasn't aimed at all Magners drinker by any means, and it'd be hypocritical if it were 'cos I quite like the stuff too. :D

But in that case, why do you believe my explanation for not choosing another cider but suspect the reasons of this stranger? Sounds a bit judgemental.. He might have chosen Carling (which IMO is vile) for the same reason I'd have moved onto something other than another cider. I think you're making a prejudicial leap to fit an idea you have about the way Magners is advertised. :p

All cider is rank.

Makes your teeth sticky.

Yuk.

I used to love cider!

I drank too much of it though, can't drink it anymore... Which is a shame as I'd have loved to piss some people off by drinking Magners... :D

Your explanation is that you like it, but no other cider. The kid I was referring to didn't want the Addlestone's because he'd never heard of it. So it seemed to me, anyway. IMO it's very true that people go for familiarity a lot of the time. And why not? At least it cuts your chance of buying something that turns out ot be disgusting. Branding creates familiarity. That's how it seemed to me, anyway.

Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe I shouldn't have madse that judgement, but to be fair it's not really all that important, is it?

<wishes he hadn't posted>

Tell you what. If I see you at Rise tomorrow I'll buy you a Magner's and then sit and compare it unfavourably with the real ale I'll doubtless be swigging! :p

Roadkill, I have a strong prediction that there'll be no real ale at this particular festival, not in the beer tent(s) anyway (unless someone has heard otherwise?)

May need to bring your own ...
