Rise Festival '08, Finsbury Park, Sun 13th July

I'm sorry. You're obviously cross. You win? OK? Peace.

Anyway, you're right. He is not what he was. But it was still fantastic seeing the man on stage.

I just don't take kindly to being patronised by someone arrogant enough to make assumptions about why I don't like something.

Your post basically said, "You're wrong and I'm right because you just don't get it, you foolish child".

Which makes you sound like a tit.

But there was a time today when the woofers were or sounded fucked. If you take umbrage so easily that's your lookout.

Well, none really. I suppose I was just reliving the afternoon and the point where the bass became unbearable and I wondered whether it was supposed to be like that. Sorry if I sounded offensive towards you in particular. That's when we went to the desert stage (wonderful) and when we came back, Jimmy Cliff was just starting and yes, he's not the man he was but he's still a legend and I loved him.

I was helping to organise a Beres Hammond gig in Gambia about 18 months ago and he did a similar sort of cabaret reggae thing.

so where the fuck was this? we saw an african stage, a london lives stage and the main stage.

Always by the tennis courts.

Bob knows why, but it's always by the tennis courts

no cuban stage (which is where we'd arranged to meet people). no reknaw stage. nowt of interest.

you mean you missed the whole process where that little shitter boris removed anything political from the event - as long as it was left-political.

but he still let insane homophobic religious organisations distribute thousands of "papers" to punters.

Political stands were outside the gates. Harringay council sent people out to remove them but some local shops and pubs refused to let them be moved from their fronts.

Great day in my book, no problems. Was busy but what do you expect on a hot day. Never got pushed about or crushed, fantastic crowd. Was quite nice not to have the political agenda pushed down my throat at every option. Was nice to be able to take beers in and I didn't see much corporate sponsorship anywhere. Nice range of music (although maybe a bit too many gaps between acts early on. Bumped into loads of random friends, seemed like most of london was there. Hare Krishna yoga tent was very chilled out.

Exactly what a free London fest should be IMHO.

Got to be better than Love Carling, Hate Racism though.

:D :hmm: ... yeah that one really WAS shit ...

Sounds like this one was overcrowded yesterday??
The last Rise I went to (2006 I think ) was PACKED.

Would have liked to get to that reggae (DJ) stage if I'd been in town.

The African music stage was actually nearest the Manor House Gates, the Desert Stage. Big Dance stage and another small stage (not quite sure what) were near the tennis courts/ skate park.

Had a really nice afternoon there but came away before the end.
Like an earlier poster said, the Desert stage was small but some good acts, loved the classical arabic music band with the sufi dancer and also the band who were playing in public for the first time - can't remember the name - with the muslim and jewish MC's and also the Rai band.

I didn't think it was too bad at all. Not too crowded and made it home remarkable swiftly on the Victoria line. Nice day.

The sound was shit though. Beardyman's second interval sounded like it was being played through blown walkman speakers underwater. Jimmy Cliff was pretty horrible really, with the sudden end a merciful escape. If he'd spent less time doing 'save the world' call and responses like an extra annoying Jackson then he could have fitted a few extra songs in. Trite bollocks.

excellent day...the reggae stage thing was really good - someone played some banging jungle at about 7 ish :D, saw bashy who did a good job early doors and the other urban stage played some wicked stuff and was down the front when jerry dammers did message to rudy...

saw loads of friends haven't seen for a while as well...

main stage was pretty shite but it always is at these type of things...css were awful apparently..

paulie - the dj stage was to the left as you walked in, by the tennis courts...

monday morning meh.

:D

that was alright. got there early enough to watch kitty, daisy & lewis (who were very good) and then met up with some friends and then pretty much ignored what was going on on any of the stages (apart from beardyman) and spent the afternoon getting nicely drunk.

I thought it was mostly good. There was a good atmosphere, the crowd seemed happy, I didn't see any trouble, and it didn't feel over-policed. No problems with people taking in their own drink etc. either.

CSS were fairly unremarkable. Jimmy Cliff was disappointing. Well, he was OK until the patronising/cheesy "save the planet" nonsense which seemed to go on for ever. And then he finished without any warning - I didn't gather whether that was his fault or the organisers' for running over time though.

There was noticeably less overtly political stuff than previous years. Not sure how I feel about that - I think it was almost certainly "wrong" to use a publicly funded event for political purposes but it did make it a bit more "interesting". (I've just remembered starting a thread about this after last year's event. The second post on that thread is kind of poignant.)

It was interesting to see that the branding around the main stage etc. read "Greater London Authority" rather than "Mayor for London" as it used to. Is this a general Boris policy, or is he just trying to distance himself from this event?

The biggest disappointment of all, of course, was that Boris himself didn't make an appearance on stage. That would have been really interesting.

P.S.

Does this explain why Boris was OK with Jimmy Cliff headlining?

Funny because as he was singing it last night I was thinking it was quite a Tory song.

I was quite enjoying Jimmy Cliff till they cut him off mid-song. That was terrible, why did it have to finish at 8.30?

Am surprised noone has mentioned Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings yet. They were brilliant, the best band I saw, but due to timing problems they only played for about 20 minutes.

CSS were pretty disappointing, which is a shame cos I like them on record.

Bad points: Got my water bottle taken off me on the way in.
Lack of choice at the beer tents.

Good points: Sharon Jones. Got home very quickly, tube wasn't even that crowded. Weather.

nah, sorry but it was rubbish imo. badly organised, no real point to it, and felt disparate.
The point was to hear some great bands live, for free. Isn't that enough.

Yeah, i know that. Just didn't enjoy it as much as previously. Didn't really see anyone, sound was poor, moving about was a pain in the arse cos bogs/food stalls blocked most of main drag. Maybe i was just feeling grumpy, i dunno?

what he said, apart from i never bothered getting there that early :D

i thoroughly enjoyed it. it was sunny, it was free, met up with good friends, and me and my girl danced madly to Gangsters with some smiling strangers, what more could you want? didnt really catch too many of the acts directly (in that we were sat down getting drunk) but beardyman was good, and whoever was on the african stage at around 5.30pm whilst i waited for the loo was fun :D

a special shout out to angela and the other ladies in the london underground tent, who kept madge amused for a good hour, with lots of freebies to boot (thankfully, madge took one look at the cap and gave it back :D)

It was a lovely festival - but the glass ban was a bit much. They could have put something on the website to warn us. I did manage to smuggle my tequila in and sell it without any hassle nonetheless. I wasn't sure why we couldn't bring in open cans but could bring in cans and open them in there? Maybe confused security guards - that made no sense at all! Still they were friendly enough and it was all good - saw some mates I hadn't seen in years :)

Glad they didn't go down the LMHR route. Had a good day/evening. And a shit Monday/Tuesday.

Nixon- You tit! :D
