Gutted to hear that Mark Fisher passed away yesterday.

    He produced some great work.

Capitalist Realism is an utter cracker of a book

I disagreed with him about a lot of things. Inevitably things got quite heated on the internet on occasion. I had hoped I was going to carry on disagreeing with him for years to come too. Very sad.

Such a shame, Capitalist Realism was a massive eye opener for my early twenty something self.

He's only one of four speakers here but I think this may be of interest to some.

I met him about a year ago. Seemed like a really decent a thoughtful person.
RIP and thoughts to his loved ones.

Blood hell. :( That it was apparently suicide (wiki) will make it even harder for his family. I know he wrote about depression (I've read the capitalist realism stuff but not that book). RIP.

'Capitalist Realism' does hint at his despair at the changing world. Will read his later texts. RIP to a unique voice.

"Class consciousness is fragile and fleeting. The petit bourgeoisie which dominates the academy and the culture industry has all kinds of subtle deflections and pre-emptions which prevent the topic even coming up, and then, if it does come up, they make one think it is a terrible impertinence, a breach of etiquette, to raise it." Entirely back to front ond on the wrong ground of course

Unless he meant class rather than class consciousness. The Class in itself, before it comes to consciousness - that is, middle class formal recognition and 'for itself' - it's what's not fragile and not fleeing. The idea that you're above the class and can say stuff like the above, that's what's based on steam, air and wind.

It's a quote taken from a wider piece that may need to be read in context.

    Exiting the Vampire Castle

I read it as the reluctance of discussing the subject of class, but you are right, it is (at the end of the day) on the wrong ground.

Cheers Danny. Just read this one:
Peter Kay and the myth of the ordinary: Cradle to Grave | New Humanist
I normally like Peter Kay but only survived, literally, about 10 seconds of watching cradle to the grave. Hadn't realised it was based on Baker's book, might go back to it. Really liked Fisher's take on Kay and Baker, particularly this bit:
Perhaps I should away to the Really Obvious Shit thread with this , but I'd never quite put into words how observational comedy actually works - reminding you of something you knew but had never identified as 'a thing'.
