RIP John Hurt

I don't think he was one of these actors who appeared in so many films and TV series because of the money, he simply preferred working to not working. When you appear in this much, then a few things will be crap of course but on the whole he chose well.

some of the stuff- there was a poor beowulf/fantasy type thing and the Ultramarines film were because he was into the idea, I read he got into warhammer/space marines as an idea from his son and so was up for doing the film

Ah thats sad. RIP John. Always thought a film was worth watching if he was in it. Thought he was particularly good in Midnight Express.

Yes, this was the first one I thought of too, despite seeing a lot of his other stuff. A great actor. RIP.

Sad news . :(

Watched 44 inch chest again last week and whatever anyone thinks of the film he was amazing in It . Worth watching for his performance alone .

The bird ODonnell in The Field was another favourite of mine .

He talks about ageing here to this annoying twat

Fuck me, that interviewer is an annoying cunt.

He had a great voice and a real presence. Always watchable and didn't sell himself to Hollywood too much

RIP John Hurt.
I liked that he was never typecast.
From the Naked Civil Servant through The Hit and Alien and The Elephant Man. Caligula in I, Claudius. His character in Contact as well as his brilliant portrayal of Control in Tinker, Tailor..
Sad loss but a back catalogue to be admired by all.

He was fucking great...

But...

I think I'd assumed he was more than 77 for at least the last 15 years.

As well as the films mentioned already, I liked him in V for Vendetta. I remember watching the film at the IMAX and seeing his threatening face fill up the screen, and thinking 'yeah, proper fascist ruler portrayal there'.

He always made a lasting impression whatever the role/film.
He was great in 1984 and 10 Rillington Place.
He made the odd bad choice - he did that ridiculous advert for AIDS with all the icebergs, drills and gravestones.

Naked Civil Servant had a profound impact on me as a teen. I loved The Elephant Man, would watch and re-watch 1984, loved Midnight Express, Alien, The Hit, he was the best thing in the Brighton Rock remake....been planning to watch Last Panthers.

And he was Aragorn...

I've just been reminded of his performance on tv in Jim Henson's The Storyteller. That was brilliant ! Anyone else remember it?

Just a couple of days before he died I went to see Jackie, the new biopic of Jackie Kennedy, in which Hurt has a small but significant part towards the end of the film. He plays the priest who conducts JFKs funeral and helps Jackie come to terms with his death, and her own life - which somehow made the news of his death seem even sadder and more poignant when I heard.

Another reason I feel really sad about John's passing is that as well as being a fine actor, John was one of a very select group of incredibly talented Englishmen who happened to have been born on the 22nd of January - the others being Lord Byron, Sir Alf Ramsey and, er, me. And now there's only me left :(

Reading this thread it is noticeable just how many of us were profoundly affected by The Naked Civil Servant. What a great testament to the man's talent. It truly was a pivotal moment in my life and it seems the lives of many of us.
