This is fucking devastating news. He was a bloody lovely bloke. There's been nothing official, but I've had a load of mutual friends (edit: and now a band member) tell me that he passed away today.

RIP John. You were a fucking diamond.

Aw man, fucksakes. I toured with the band back in the Exile days and he was a fucking lovely, intelligent, funny man.

Yep. I hesitated to post anything up for ages in the hope that it wasn't true, but two other people confirmed it. He was indeed a very bright and funny chap. I must have known him for about 25 years. So fucking sad.

This is awful news. I didn't know him well but met him a few times.

I have fond memories of when we lived in Brixton and had a house party, the party was dying down a bit, then the Alabama 3 and their entourage turned up and kept it going right through to the morning.

    RIP Jake :(

Very sad news. Loved Alabama3, spent a few nights caning it with them over the years.

Got into them through Exile on Coldharbour Lane, when one of my mates randomly picked it up as the title described his current life circumstances.

So glad I made it to the recent gig at Jamm, they were on such top form.

    RIP Rev

“Exile...” is easily in my top 10 albums of all time. It was (is) just so utterly perfect for that time.

Alabama 3 had shitloads of gigs and festivals lined up over the summer too. I can't imagine them without John.

Yep, it's hard to imagine - I was looking forward to December, when they were going to perform "Exile on Coldharbour Lane" in full at the Brixton Academy - I heard about the gig and decided to buy tickets and worry about little details like getting back to Britain later.

It really was the perfect soundtrack for that time. So many find memories of bouncing round my living room in Shakespeare road pre and post The Dogstar/Albert/duke of Edinburgh

Very sad. Got the news literally 10 minutes after I had bought tickets for the Exile show at the Academy.
Hoping the show will be some sort of fitting tribute.
Best of their gigs (to me) was the series they did at the camden underworld in the early 2000's - one night Gospel, next night techno, next night country themed If I remember well

Was hoping to see them for the first time at a festival this summer. RIP, both:(
