Gordon Banks: World Cup winning goalkeeper dies aged 81
One of my father's football heroes. RIP
He was pretty damn good!
The first sportsperson biography I ever read
Rest well, Gord
He always seemed a really nice guy.
Good game Gordon. Thanks for saving us.
I last saw him play for Stoke at Old Trafford on a Tuesday night in October 1971. In the League Cup which they went on to win that season. A great sportsman.
Sad news. RIP Gordon.
50 odd years ago and that is still the most talked about match in English football history. We owe him and his teams mates that day so much.
Thanks Gordon, your memory well n truly lives on.
I'd love for the Beeb or someone to repeat in full some momentous games from history. They've done this in the run-ups to tournaments before and I've loved being able to see the 66 final, England-Argentina 1986 and England-West Germany 1990, games I was either not born for or too young at the time. Along with seeing England-Netherlands 1996 again, I'd love for them to show the England-Brazil game from 1970. I've never seen a full game with Pelé in, it had the Moore tackle on Jairzinho, and of course Banks' save.
Every time you made a good save as a kid playing in the street it was obligatory to shout "GORDON BANKS!"
Not sure there's any more fitting tribute. (Or funnier).
Bloody love Fast Show
I've seen some good saves but it's very rare you see one that you think is impossible.
