RIP Bobby Robson, England, Newcastle and Ipswich manager

Very sad news.

Sir Bob had the same form of cancer that my dad died of, exactly three years ago today.

I shall have to raise two glasses this evening.

A genuinely nice bloke so far as I can see. Somebody you could imagine working really hard for during the day and then enjoying a few beers and a chinwag with in the evening.

Anybody listening to 5Live and people phoning in about meeting him in various places and how much of a generous kind man he was.

They (truly) dont make 'em like that anymore...:(

he boned you?
Unnecesary.

I suppose my fondest association with him has to be Euro 96 when England were just so close. It was the month when football really went mainstream and women were talking at the checkouts about injury time and penalties and how it all worked.

I don't remember big screens in pubs then but we all gathered around different mates places anyway.

He had some difficult choices to make that tournament, especially before the Germany game. Thanks for all that, Bob.

What are you on about? Terry Venables was boss in Euro 96?

Bobby was Italia 1990 and Mexico 1986. Can't remember where the Euro's were held but we were shit and the press got nasty with Bobby.

Bobby told them to fuck themselves in a polite way.

These journalists will be gushing tomorrow - fucking knobs.

My hero.

Took Ipswich Town from mediocrity to European greatness, he is a god here in Suffolk and the whole place is in mourning.

Scarves and flags are being laid at his statue and a book of rememberance has been placed at Portman Road, I shall be there this evening for the friendly and then a few of us will gather at this statue for a while.

I am in pieces, crying as I write this.

I was about to say that it's a rare event, when someone dies, that a thread on Urban is unanimous in its sadness and respect for the deceased. Still, then Relahni came along ....

RIP Sir Bobby .... one of the best English managers of all time. :(

Nice tribute from Alex Ferguson, I am sure there will be plenty more;

"I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I'm sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that.

"In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above Bobby Robson. I mourn the passing of a great friend; a wonderful individual; a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed.

"His character was hewn out of the coal face; developed by the Durham County mining background that he came from.

"His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a genuinely colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which then he passed on to his sons.

"The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile; always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems.

"The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let's hope it won't be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them."

My step daughter didn't know who sir Bob was.

So I explained how he got us the 4th in the world cup in 1990

'I was born in 92' she said

I feel old!

i know next to nothing about football but even I couldn't avoid being aware of what a decent bloke Robson was. RIP
