right thinking or right action?

From your link mate:

In Theravada Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka and Thailand, Buddhist laymen and laywomen will often spend one day a week (on the Uposatha days: the new moon, first-quarter moon, full moon and last-quarter moon days) living in the monastery, and practicing the eight precepts.

The Buddha gave teachings on how the eight precepts are to be practiced,[1] and on the right and wrong ways of practicing the eight precepts.[2]

1. I undertake to abstain from taking life (both human and nonhuman).
2. I undertake to abstain from taking what is not given (stealing).
3. I undertake to abstain from all sexual activity.
4. I undertake to abstain from telling lies.
5. I undertake to abstain from using intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness.
6. I undertake to abstain from eating at the wrong time (the right time is eating once, after sunrise, before noon).
7. I undertake to abstain from singing, dancing, playing music, attending entertainment performances, wearing perfume, and using cosmetics and garlands (decorative accessories).
8. I undertake to abstain from luxurious places for sitting or sleeping.

Laymen and laywomen only have the first five precepts to follow.

#3: this is not true, only need to abstain from affairs with people other than their partner.

Nowadays in thailand, the life of a monk is more comfortable. They can sleep in beds, they can eat after midday.

Furthermore, they attend various ceremonies where they do their chanting (singing for sure), and they play local instruments. I know this, they did it at my house, and i've seen it at many weddings.

I have just seen a calendar which marks down one day per week for the temple time. So wiki has missed out the half moon date.

Wiki really needs to update itself.

So sign up and update it - that's the whole point of wiki!

On the 8 precepts thing...just do a Google search on it and you'll see it's a part of the sila - indeed, pick up a BOOK on Buddhism and you'l see that far from being simple, it's one of the most complex systems of thought created.

I'm sure you're right mate, books can do that.

But i shall continue to do some rather more practical research, on another day now.

I would never assume enough authority to present myself as an expert. Well, maybe on urban...
