Right book, right time; wrong book, wrong time?

Sorry, but the mental image of you reading The Road on the beach in Bali makes me LOL so much :D

It was a very bad choice and it did take its toll on me. The happy carefree children paddling in the clear blue ocean, as the palm trees gently swayed in the breeze, suddenly transformed into a holocaust of distorted, blackened, charred limbs tossed horribly into the polluted saturation of the raging gray sea.

My mate who was travelling with me, took my advice not to read it while we were in Bali, but I said he really must read it at some point. I got an email from him yesterday to say that he was reading The Road while in Cambodia  and was having a bit of hard time with it ... Might just fit in with a visit to The Killing Fields.

I read Under the Volcano over the course of a week on a deserted Ionian beach with only one other person there. It was the summer following the Nato bombing of Serbia and having read stories in the paper about ships arriving on random beaches to let off troops and tanks for the invasion of Kosovo, at night I kept imagining lights in the distance and worrying about ships approaching the beach, which added too much to the threatening feeling of being under a volcano.

Also, best not try to read A Million Little Pieces when you feel you are going clinically insane through stress.

Actually, and this is horribly trite, but it was only through that that I actually realised that what my doctor was telling me was true. I was an alcoholic.
