Ridley Scott's American Gangster

Can't say I enjoyed it that much. Russel Crow is crap and insepid, Denzil Washington is well... Denzil. Nothing much really happens it just meanders along for two hours until the inevitable shoot out at the end. All the characters in it have no real depth to them. Crow cares about his kid and Washington takes care of his mum and that's about as much as you find out about them or care to. The rest of the characters are just filler on screen.

Dull. Boring. Long.

4/10

I am sure people will like it and it'll be greatly received, I am just bored of Hollywood and stale films. I guess it is also partly down to other gangster films are truely great and this isn't. Like I said though some people will think it is great and it is quite slick in places but on the whole I was bored after an hour and lost interest. It also ends quite hurridly.

Intacto, a Spanish film about fate / luck and how it is a commodity that can be traded and passed on. Really good.

Paprika, one of the best Anime's I have seen and I am quite fussy when it comes to animated films.

Science of Sleep, love it! Very quirky and a really good love story.

Stardust, Hollywood but it works. Modern fairy tale based on a book by Neil Gaiman (read two of his books and they're both very good).

London to Brighto, grim, dark but uplifting and has some very good acting in it.

Intacto is probably the one that stands out for me though. Excellent!

Most of those aren't exactly 'new' - Gondry's new film is coming out next month.

Stardust was piss poor.

I know they're not new. There's been nothing in the last 10 years that has really made me think 'wow'. I like Stardust, made me fluffy :)

Fortunately I don't feel like that. I suppose new films close to that category that I have seen at the cinema in the last 10 years are:

LA Confidential
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
City of God
Whale Rider
Kill Bill Vol. 1
The Fog of War
Dead Man's Shoes
The Incredibles
The Sea Inside
Maria Full of Grace
Downfall
King Kong

I suppose one could say that 15 in 10 years is bad, but I think it's a reasonable ratio.

Could have been much better, lacked punch due to being overly long - by at least 45 minutes. Little sympathy for the characters. Meh.

Saw this last night - it's everything you've come to expect from Scott.

I wouldn't say it's too long, and certainly didn't find it dull, but it is essentially Blow with a bigger budget.

I read this and saw lord of the rings trilogy, and realized your opinion doesn't count.

I'm lucky, I have a very low quality threshold when it comes to being able to enjoy something so I'll probably love this...

Perhaps you're bored by his consistent excellence? Even in duffish films (Pelican Brief, Manchurian remake) his class shines through.

i think i find it harder to dislike a film than i do to like it. Some are obviously better than others, but a film would have to be 'dreamgirls' poor before i started posting about it on the internet.

I saw Eastern Promises at the weekend. Bloody brilliant. Apart from the thirst for vodka I developed. American Gangsters can sod off back to Hollywood.
