Riddim ID

screaming target is just the deejay version of 'no, no, no' rather than being intended as a seperate track though, surely?

it was recorded as a track with DP's vocals stripped out. BY intended to record it as a track, like it's not jsut a bootleg of a DJ toasting somewhere IYSWIM

it gets a bit confusing, it all overlaps and it's all based on the same recycling that reggae seems to run on. Screaming Target is the deejay version (the dub would generally be instrumental / largely vocal free).

often you'd get the original, the deejay version and the dub released concurrently. That's versioning, really. The whole idea of riddims in the original sense is that it would happen a long time later - late 70s deejays or singers picking up classic 60s rocksteady or early reggae riddims to work with.

don't know if this is relevant (your lot's knowledge is making me gape a bit :) ) but i thought the dub version on 12" singles was so the toasters could do their thing after the song had played?

over the past couple of weeks, i've been having fun listening to a lot of british reggae. i'm playing Silly Games - Janet Kay at the moment, and i'm not the biggest lovers fan but i think it's a gorgeous riddim! especially the first few bars...does anyone know if there were any other tracks using the same one iyswim?

I think, criminally, it is a one off. There's a pretty good dub version tho.

Oh and a passable do-over by Bobby Kray from last year, which I think Bovell was involved with.

criminally is right! they missed a trick with that one.

what a class rhythm/riddim. it's got a real rootsy bassline imo - and the melody (keyboard?) i think is brilliant.

don't know the Bobby Kray..i'll do a search.

p.s i'll read your Maxi Priest blog properly when i've got time. i'm intrigued...
