Rich Kid Poor Kid...

plus who can tell how many minuts of normal conversation were left on the editing room floor to find those moments of idiocy

^^^

This.

Although it is easy to dislike the rich girl, I must admit that I did raise an eyebrow when the "poor" girl and her mother seemed to have a cigarette on the go in almost every scene when the young kid was sleeping on the floor.

Priorities people FFS.

Having said that, the editing in the programme was obscene, I would not be surprised if that family have to move house & sharpish.

Yeah and I loved the way they had 2 healthy looking Staffs. Makes you wonder where the money comes from?

Like you say priorities.

Agree about the editing but I enjoyed this show, the Poor Girl (Natalie?) was ace, hope she gets some decent breaks in life because she sure deserves them. I didnt hate Rich Girl, shes immature and seemed to learn something from the experience.

The Mum was dreadful, one of the things that struck me (and which I've witnessed before with the middle classes) is the sheer terror Council Estates hold for them, they really do think they're all hellholes where your liable to get murdered as soon as oyu show your face.

Only saw the last 5 minutes of it..... blame it on the posh mum..... she's clearly a dufus

really really want to see the entire thing, but i cant get 4od:(

Do you think rich girl's mum was following them round the house because she thought Natalie was going to steal something?

Yes, she looked highly suspicious.

I have no doubt there was some creative editing going on but ultimately just look at Alices vile mummy to see how she'll turn out.

As for Natalies family. She knows how out of order it was that her brother wasn't in school or didn't have a bedroom which is why she was so defensive when questioned about it. She wanted to protect her mum.

I think Natalie was allowed to go unchallenged pretty much throughout, seemingly to keep her victim status within the show. At the same time Alice was goaded into saying something bad at every opportunity.

The show infuriated me for it's reinforcements of every stereotype imaginable. I grew up in a sink estate on bugger all and I know many others who did. I found the stereotypes of Natalie and her family as offensive as anything else throughout.

just google channel 4 and click watch online, there are a lot of programs that you can watch without using 4OD,

total hatchet job on the posh kid - her mum was a twat though...the 'poor girl' was really articulate and bright and really hope she does get a few breaks and it was good to see her brother get a bed and a place at a school at the end...

yes I think the mum was following them round to check nothing was nicked...
:D

just a stupid channel 4 programme but watchable none the less...thought it might be a bit more intelligent and probing than it was but with a title of 'poor kid rich kid I'm not sure why I thought that...

There was something Natalie said that I didn't really like during that, when the posh girl asked her "how many GCSE's did you get?" and she said something like, "none, poor person's education". I don't know how the system works in London but I managed to come from a council estate with my mum on benefits and I ended up in university. You can't blame a lack of qualifications on being poor. Family and environment certainly but not wealth.

Glad someone else felt that. That really pissed me off and having come from a similar background I found the 'poor girls' attitudes towards working class people just as offensive. Her family was not a typical working class family and I'm sure not representative of the general population of her estate but a lot of people will come away from the show thinking just that (be it in a 'typical dole scum' manner or the patronising 'poor old hard done by working class')

They didn't seem to be doing themselves any favours or trying to do anything to improve their lot.

By the way I want to point out that I thought the rich mum was a twat too but I think it's been said enough already.

Eh? you mean painting the bedroom, getting the loan for the bed, trying to get her little brother into school etc? I thought she was doing admirably considering her family situation.

^^^ This. I would guess that Natalie has no GCSEs and didn't finish school because of her mum no because poor kids don't get qualifications as she claimed. She talked a lot about her mums depression and I'll bet that she has virtually been that boys mother as a result hence it being her sorting everything out. She wouldn't say that though because that would mean criticizing her mum and she is clearly very protective.

That's my hunch.

I thought she seemed intelligent and articulate and really ought to have got some GCSE's. I can only assume there's a bit more to it than being 'poor' (maybe the school were pretty useless??)

As I say, there probably is an underlying reason or reasons for her not having any but I don't think it's fair for her to blame it on being poor. We'll never know.

I just know from my old high school (which had was quite mixed socially) that unless you were in all the top sets the teachers pretty much gave up on you and you had to pretty much do stuff off your own bat.... and to be frank some of the teachers were snobby and didn't expect as much off the less well off kids.

Don't what her school was like, but there are some with general cultures of not expecting achievement, sadly. :(

I thought she had indicated during the programme that she ended up dropping out at 15 in part because of her mum's depression and she was looking after her brother who would only have been about 2 or 3 at the time.

Fuck. :(

No wonder Northern Ireland constantly kick your asses every year when it comes to highest grades in GCSE's and A-levels in the country. :D

Reminded of this:

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

......................... you're kidding, right?

Of course it's because she's poor, ffs! You saw where she lived, you saw the responsibilities she had to deal with, you saw that there was nobody to help her. What 'underlying' reason ties all of the shit she has had to deal with together.... could it be.... her class....?

How the hell can you watch a program that blatantly states it is dealing with the issue of rich v. poor and come away wondering how it is that 'poor girl' hasn't got as many qualifications as 'rich girl'?
