Restaurants in Camberwell?

Ms T

Honey-coloured ramparts
Despite living just up the road from Camberwell, I've never actually been to any of the restaurants there. We're going to a jazz gig in Camberwell on Friday, and would like to eat somewhere first.

Any recommendations? Ta muchly.

The Italian on the corner is nice - Mozzarella e Pomodores - only been there once, but was lovely and reasonable.

There are some alright places to eat in the Camberwell end of Peckham too - depends whereabouts your gig is.

I had a nice curry there a couple of years ago - has a green frontage...can't remember the name but it was different to your average curry house - they'd made more of an effort with the menu.

I think it's on Camberwell Church St.

Tadim Cafe - an excellent, excellent italian place - great food and decor. nice atmosphere.

Hoa Viet - new owners have taken care of this place. when ordering, check out the beef special pho. and they do excellent steamed shrimp rolls and traditional pancakes. i wouldn't eat anything else from the menu as the chef is most likely to fuck complex dishes up.

Safa? We get deliveries from there sometimes as it was recommended by the guys who lived in our place before us. It's really lovely :)

is gig at the crypt? i think they do food there....

I've had food at the castle before it's nice but not a restuarant :)

i havent had food at the crypt but my housemate went for her birthday and enjoyed it....

the food at the bear is very nice but not cheap a roast is eleven quid! Although they offer student discount on food and alcohol

err Tadim's is a Turkish cafe. Excellent baklava and coffee, pretty good mezze, mains range from reasonable to fairly bad.

Agree about Hoa Viet tho! :)

yep, tadim's is turkish - the meze is really good and only £3 (have just had for my dinner - yum) don't really eat anything else from there. its more like a cafe than a restaurant.
pomodoro e morarella has closed down - buckled under the competition from carvaggio's down the road which is really nice and reasonably priced.
dark horse (pub / restaurant) on grove lane does nice food too and the staff are usually friendly... unlike the grove or whatever its called now on camberwell grove - the pizza oven was the only thing that made the stroppy service bearable but thats now gone..

No, it closed for a refurb, but has now reopened! Not sure if they're still doing the 'super tuesday' half-price business tho.

Another good one, Seymour's on Grove Lane, just up from the Hermit's Cave, turns into an excellent and very reasonably priced Thai place in the evening.

Always had good times in 'The Vineyard' but if I reflect on things that was probably more to do with the company and the booze as opposed to the food which was fine but not outstanding.

You might be better off heading over to Lordship lane for more choice.

yeah, mozzarella e pomodoro was closed for a refurb - I saw a big add somewhere the other day saying that they were open again now.

Tadim's is good and very cheap.

Had lunch at Nisha's recently and that was ok, but I only had the lunch special. Don't know what the evening menu is like.

oh, i hadn't noticed that. i saw a notice on the door a few weeks back thanking customers for their support so assumed they were gone for good. there is also the flying fish near the castle - they are a fish and chip shop at the front and a fish restaurant at the back - i've just had takeaway. think it might be BYO.

Ginseng Noodle on Coldharbour Lane. Looks unpromising, but is really good & easy on the pocket.

As said ^^^ The Bear does good grub, but not so cheap.

their noodle soups are good.
everything else - bog standard.

has anyone been to Eastern Tree?
i love vietnamese but that place always look dead...

I eat in Camberwell quite a bit.

Mozzarella e Pomodoro has been shut for months, if it's open again that's pretty good news 'cos they have a good pizza oven. Half of the staff left in November and opened Caravaggio's the Italian cafe/restaurant up the road near the Castle. They do very good starters, pasta and salads but no pizza. All very friendly staff.

The Vineyard - Good food considering how busy they were (Valentines). Not outstanding, but alright.

Tadim's is great food and not that expensive.

Th efood in the Castle is reasonable pub fayre.

Ho Viet is pretty good.

Safa is the best Indian in Camberwell, their deliveries come freshly cooked, heat sealed and labelled too. Really good food.

All the English style cafe's are rubbish and minging, but fortunately Johnnies Caff is just down on the corner of Coldharbour Lane and Kenbury Street. Best fry ups in the area, especially the bubble and squeak.

Caribbean food - Jamaicans go straight for the one on the corner of Valmar Road and Coldharbour Lane. Take away only and you have to wait, but it's the best.

Anyone tried any of the African restaurants?
