Resolve this through democracy. Ian fucking Brown poll

answer now please

I understand why Madchester felt (note the "felt", not "was") like an exciting time.

What's the difference between feeling and being?

Anyway, I "felt" very excited when I was there at the end of the 80s/start of 90s, even if, under your definition I "wasn't" actually excited.

So I'll leave you with a Tony Wilson quote: "You're entitled to your opinion, but your opinion is shit".

Love the man. traks like dolphins were monkeys and f.e.a.r. are wicked! not been off the mp3 player.

each to their own though :)

indeed, they were going to be my two prime examples of why I think he's shit :D

i managed to hold two separate entities in my mind - The Stone Roses and Ian Brown - and judge each on its own merits.

It's hardly a fucking Jedi mind trick

withchery! elitism! you love him you just wanna be cool!

And the Stone Roses are totally overrated, too.

aren't they? all that fuss over one half decent record?
Inspiral carpets probably had more good tunes

As for his solo stuff, I quite like the first one. I stopped buying them after that, though. And don't ask me when I last played it.
Same here. But as i said on the other thread, it was witnessing his pathetic 'live' performance (for want of a more appropriate word), which made me realise he was nothing but a con-man masquerading as a musician.

But i gotta say i have a grudging admiration for him - how someone so lacking in talent, charm and musical integrity could have forged a moderately successful solo career for so long is truly a remarkable achievement!

Oops - I posted the below on the other thread, mistakenly believing that I was in this one...

The poll bit is obviously the relevant comment here.

I like a lot of his stuff.

Unfinished Monkey Business and Music of the Spheres are great albums and his other stuff is often "decent" though I couldn't deny his live singing is pretty atrocious...

There needed to be a slightly less enthusiastic, yet still positive answer on the poll.

Oh - and FWIW given that he has been called out as being a twat IRL on this thread - I bumped into him at Stanstead airport once whilst he was on his way back from a festival and he was very approachable. Had time for a quick chat and a picture etc, despite being obviously tired and with his missus and kid.

Growing up in Brum the scene with PWEI, Neds, Stuffies etc felt exciting but it doesn't mean they were all brilliant bands. Madchester bascially produced what 10 decent singles from 2 bands - the Mondays and the Stone Roses.

Anyhow - Stones Roses, brilliant first album - the drums, the bass, Squire's guitar the hushed vocals. Ian Brown solo - shite

Top bloke, iconic front man, dodgy solo tunes (but at least he evolves ... singing in Spanish, playing new instruments). Will always be a legend.
gx

PS how much is my original Stone Roses vinyl signed by Brown worth?

Does anyone like him more than the Stone Roses? Seems like most people like him as they have fond memories of the time the SR came out. Which was ages ago!

I'd have preferred something not a decisive as
"Fucking Excellent Awesome Records"
but this is what I voted. He's got the old ex-stoner, psuedo hippy nonsense sewn up though. Trippy lyrics and guitars. I think at least 50% of his solo stuff is listenable to and will still be in a few years. Bloke can't hold a tune live though., but does that matter?
