Resisting the FIT Teams: A proposal for action

Maybe, just maybe, they didn't "bottle it" (if they'd wanted too they could have got hundreds of officers and fought you and won).

Maybe, just maybe they decided that you had a justifiable issue; that a protest outside a police station was, in itself, lawful and appropriate in the circumstances and that having a massive fight over something trivial like obstruction of the highway or some sort of noise issue was simply not merited ...

I know that complaints are investigated.

I know that it is easily possible to find briefs who will sue the police for pretty much fuck all (at least in London).

I know that dozens and dozens of people do so. I would be very, very surprised if you had a reasonable case if you could not find a lawyer to pursue it for you.

And I know that if I believed I was treated wrongly I would pursue it as far as I could in any way I could - complaint, the law, publicity, whatever.

Even where it is dead easy to challenge improper official behaviour (e.g. parking tickets) people can't be arsed ... and when the officials (inlcuding police officers) realise that they will be encouraged to play on it.

I tried to manage my team properly. I simply couldn't do so without the public making complaints because as soon as the coppers walked out of the door I had little idea of what they were doing. I could do things to find out (and I did what I could) but I still only personally saw a tiny proportion of how they dealt with people.

Okay. That's a reasonable response, but it's written from the point of view of someone from (the) inside (of the police force) looking out. Perhaps you thought I was being trite and glib when I wrote

You still think like a police officer, DB.

but I was being deadly serious. That aspect of your personality which enabled you to rise through the ranks of the force to manage 'a team' is the very same self-belief, confidence and strength of character which would enable you, so you say, to pursue a case where you believed you had been wronged.

I'm asking you if you have any idea what it's like for a member of the public to be on the receiving end of the Met? And then the thought of the marathon in front of you to get justice.

Have you ever sat in a cell, knowing that when the key turns in the lock and the door opens you're going to get a hiding and there's not a thing you can do about it? And if you complain, you're watching your back?

**shrugs**

Complaints against the police are investigated? Sure. By the police. Close ranks but every now and again sacrifice one of your own for the greater good of the other Brothers (and Sisters).

Account of FIT at DSEi public meeting

This meeting was called to discuss plans for disrupting the world’s largest arms fair, DSEi (Defence Systems and Equipment International) which takes place on 11th – 14th September 2007 at the ExCeL Centre in East London.

The meeting was also used as the first public call to resist the Forward Intelligence Teams (the cops who stand outside meetings taking photos and making notes about those in attendance).

Around ten people attended the protest outside the meeting with two large banners and a couple of small ones. One was particularly effective as it was on poles which meant it could directly obstruct the photographer’s view. Our aim was to prevent them from taking photographs of those entering the meeting and we were largely successful both because their attention was mostly directed at us and because the banners were large enough to block their view.

Also a new thread has been set up on www.fitwatch.blogspot.com for people to add photos and details of FIT cops. Add stuff there or email it to defycops(at)yahoo.co.uk

No arrests were made and people were able to attend the meeting without having their photographs taken.

The next DSEi public meeting will be on 28th July at 2pm - location to be confirmed. There will also be anti fit presence outside this meeting.

It was also be good if other groups wanted to get in touch and adopt this strategy outside their meetings
