And maybe Etherington too seeing as Cole will never fit in consistantly on the left hand side.

Matty is a definite option for the left hand side. Eriksson should have a look at him this season.

I agree. The main problem with the England set up at the moment is that they try to fit in a big star in every position, whereas most successful teams internationally, have some big stars, plus players who aren't necessarily so but who are comfortable in that position.

Most importantly, Etherington can cross from the left in a way that Cole can't.

The fact is Sven is picking maybe the best players but not the best team. SG and FL have yet to do anything when on the same pitch and one of them paired with Beckham provides no insurance for the defence. It seems to me the Beckham is kept in for his marketing strength rather than ability to play in the team. While we can argue all day over whether he's better looking than Rooney ( ;) ), there's no way in a million years he is or has ever been a better player, and Rooney's system needs the discipline of Carrick to hold and distribute simply or long, whichever is most suitable.

spoken like a true spurs fan!

what is "rooney's system"?

and why is michael carrick the best option for the job of holding midfielder?

By the Rooney system I mean building the team around him so he can best utilise his talents the hurt defences, and that means his team-mates maintain positional discipline, something Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard have all fallen foul of. Carrick won't let his eyes light up and try and go round the whole defence but will stay where he's meant to and distribute the best balls. He hasn't yet scored for Spurs which whilst not complementing his long range shooting ability also shows he's willing to let others, Davids, Mido, Defoe, do what they do best, although it hasn't quite clicked yet this season.

This isn't just me talking as Spurs fan because if I only worked through blinkered glasses I would be proposing Ledley alongside Terry and Defoe ahead of Owen, which I'm not. They're both on the bench for me. And Jenas and Routledge struggle on the outer fringes of the England squad as well.
