Rent now buy later

Any other people think that they will still be renting for a very long time to come?

Hell yeh. On one hand it really bothers me cos I just want somewhere to call 'mine' on the other I'm glad I'm not trapped in a mortgage and held responsible for all the repairs. :D

my mortgage is low, but having paid out for a new kitchen, repainting the front and roof repairs over the last year, it hasn't meant I am that much better off

Yeh I do internal decoration, but I'd spend a lot more (and probably care more too :o) if I owned it!! :D

apart from the kitchen, we've err.... neglected interna decs for a while, also need new carpet/flooring, repainting of bedroom/living room/hallway - we are putting all that off atm tbh:D

I've got to say that that looks like a rant of a middle class curtain twitcher, bemoaning the fact that they can't keep up with the Jones' and revelling in the misfortune of others not that dissimilar to themselves.

Anyone else read this link from the BBC website:

Rent now buy later housing plan

Thought this was a step in the right direction with the number of people having to rent and unable to save. Obviously this carries a cost to the taxpayer but surely a lot of people can see the longer term benefits of this scheme?

SW2 has an average price for a one-bedroom flat of £209,799 according to www.findaproperty.com and with average earnings somewhere around £30,000 it is pretty much impossible to buy for many. Then getting stuck in the rental trap (with prices increasing) this becomes even harder.

Nothing that we don't already know I guess but will watch this one closely.

It's just a new method of subsidising home-ownership, just as "Right to Buy" was. It has the same implicit quid pro quo: "We do this for you, you vote for us".

What?! :D Who was that aimed at?

I know that a few HAs really went for it a few years back, building shared ownership flats (which count towards the social housing build figures) and have been left with a lot they can't sell, and becuase of the funding, they have difficulties allowing them to be rented as part of the social housing rented sector !

craziness
The house that the not-so-Lovely-Lodger bought and moved into was a housing association shared ownership property and that had been empty for about a year or so.
