Removing music from iTunes/Mac without removing from iPod

Set iTunes to manage your iPod music manually? :hmm:

Why would you want to do it anyway? Once you've deleted it from iTunes, it's rather more difficult to get it back from the iPod (not impossible, just requires jumping through a lot of hoops).

Turn off auto sync in the itunes preferences and then it'll stay the same unless you drag and drop/check new tunes onto the ipod

It's already on manual. How do I move music from my Mac to my iPod - the only way I know how to do it is to 'sync iPod' - surely that means if I've deleted anything from iTunes, it will delete it from the iPod too?

Cos I have 160 gig on my iPod and rather less on my Mac - my startup disc is full and I need to delete a load of stuff

Just select the songs from your iTunes Music Library and drag them onto the iPod's icon in the bar on the left.

That's what I do all the time, anyhow.

Once your music is on the ipod, uncheck the sync option and then whatever you delete from your mac won't affect what's on your ipod.

If you have plenty of free space on the iPod, try copying some of your other files onto it on the Desktop.

I think you need an external hard drive - you can get 300+ Gb for about £40 these days.

I've heard the external hard drives can be unreliable. Anyway, why do I need one when the iPod works well enough as one?
Not sure what you mean by 'try copying some of your other files onto it on the Desktop'?
I have about 50 gig free on my iPod

OK - another one, I've deleted files to make room for new ones, yet they still show up on iTunes with a ! next to them - how do I delete these so they don't annoy me whilst scrolling through iTunes

File - Library - Consolidate Library

(note that this may move some music files around. this wil only annoy you if you have an anal file & folder system, which I doubt you do :))

whohoo - I have no folder system apart from the odd one made for parties - everything else is just in Music - cheers Crispy - seasons greetings!

If your osx version is 10.5 or more, then you MUST get an external drive of equal or larger size than your laptop's drive. Then use it for Time Machine, which is magic backup that can save your arse.

I did this, but the CD that I added to the library is still there in my recently added folder - why oh why can't you just delete it from iTunes and it's gone permanently?

That's odd. Consolidate is supposed to remove 'dead' links. I guess you just find that album and delete it in itunes, and say YES when asked if you wnat to delete the files too.

You can't delete from iTunes though can you? You have to go to the iTunes library folder and delete it there - then you go into iTunes and the album is still listed, but with a ! next to each track

No! That's precisely why you have the problem :)

Get songs up in itunes (not in a playlist, just browsing the library)
Highlight the ones you want to kill
Hit backspace

You get two prompts. One asking if you want to remove the songs from your library, then another asking if you want to trash the files.

wouldnt deleting the database work?
then when booting up itunes it would write a new one with only whats actually there?
a shot in the dark, like :hmm:
