Remind me again why I teach...

I'll ignore the prick.

Ghandi once responded to the question, What do you think of British civilization?

He said, as I do, "That would be a nice thing."

Treefrog.. last year on my placement, I got the whole personal Q thing. I wear a ring on my 3rd left hand finger. I suppose it's a kind of engagement ring.. but neither gaijinboy or I are really the wedding type. We may well do it one day but who knows?

Anyway, I managed to field most personal Qs pretty well. But one day, whilst being particulary harrassed I had a whole class of yr 7 asking if I was engaged.. so I said yes.

For the rest of the term I had 2 particular girls asking if they could be my bridesmaids - quite seriously. :D (so sweet) Then when I left they made a huge poster/card thing with individual messages.... 50% of which said "have a lovely wedding"... :D

oops...

Not sure what I'll say when I end up back there, as I most probably will on supply!

Say you're married. And it was lovely. And you missed them. :D

He was also apparantly a wife beater. So there we go.

(and I don't have a link for that)

A proportion has, yes. But it's mainly my own experiences that colour my opinions.
but surely you're open to "learning", too?

if your more recent experience teaches you that teachers do care and want to improve - then isn't it rather closed-minded to assume that what you experienced in the past is still commonplace?

I'm not sure if I either said that or thought that. I actually think not. But I continue to aver that I have a total aversion to anyone who thinks they have 'the knowledge'. Except London taxi drivers, of course.

I taught overseas for 4 years and then here privately and again as a trainee state secondary teacher - I've always felt that one of the things that attracts me to teaching is that I feel that as much as I teach - I learn even more. I've met numerous teachers who feel the same way.

Yeah, imo it's typical of a good teacher.

I'm glad to hear that. I only wish that you, (and the numerous others) represented the majority.

in my experience (of working with teachers in contemporary schools) she does.

there are shit teachers - but they're a minority ime.

if you aren't going to get something out of it (personal growth and development - learning) teaching's too fucking hard to be worth it.

I know it was a long time ago, but most my teachers were ex-WWII soldiers who were excused any form of qualification. It's hard to forget that.

Teachers tend to bear in mind the teachers that managed to enthuse them rather than emulate the ones that didnt. Totally agree with the points made about continuing to learn as you teach. The sort of teachers you describe (Locknlight) taught me as well - they were rubbish and they would last about 5 mins these days.

I do believe L&L's oar has been eaten by a crocodile.

You stick at it TF - remember what iemanja said to you at mation's wedding? It's totally true, you're a natural.

i think L&L should be aware that his experience of teaching then certainly doesn't represent (at the very least) urban's current crop of teachers.

this thread has helped remind me why i left :(

What questions were they asking you to get you upset?

I hope tomorrow goes better for you and remember that tomorrow's thursday and thursday = almost friday which = almost weekend ;)

(((((treefrog)))))
I'm a Miss not a Mrs because I can't get a good fuck, apparently

I dunno.. I occasionally look at the teenagers going to school and I think "No fucking way!" Apparently this is a mutually beneficial arrangement.

I dunno treefrog - apparently its a vocation. I guess you could look upon your workload as 'fast living'.

I hear it gets easier anyway.

Well cheers L&L for reminding me that, even if the students think that I'm nowt more than a pathetic wee girly who needs a good shag, at least the public are behind teachers and what they do.

Took a knife off a student today who was about to drop it out a third floor window onto the walkway beneath. When I called for backup I was told to just "hang on to it and give it to my HOF"

I'm no longer upset, I'm fucking furious. And I'm very, very close to packing it in.

Not a good week all in...

But If you can identify a good student, or a good piece of work, something positive then it can seem all worth while. Personally i'm still fuming after an appaling day (though not as bad as tf's, so i'm making tea ;) )

As for teachers not wanting to learn... Well that would be nonsense in my experience. At the very fundemetal level there is the need to learn the details of new courses, new assessments, new curricula etc. beyond of course is the profesional development neccesary to rise up the ladder, as well as to improve ones teaching style.

Not to mention the need to adapt lessons to modern and latest material. Oh and what about the TES's article on reading. Apparently Teachers are more likely to read (for fun) than anyother profession.

Not interested in learning? Thats the biggest load of bollocks i've heard since the faculty meeting this evening (and that included a deputy head talking about paradigm's  :D )

Yeah, we have a learning group - that meets voluntarily to deepen our understanding of learning.

Then the members do professional development and training with the whole school.

that school sounds appaling.

the senior management team is everything when it comes to discipline, and discipline is almost everything in teaching.

speak to your line mAnager, your mentor and your union rep. make it clear that you cannot work without support from the SMT.

any child bringing a knife into my school would get at few days' exclusion.

sweetie - it does sound godawful. see your rep tommorrow, promise?

brownies honour. Line manager was really good about it today, but I think it's time that I started making some noise about the complete discipline breakdown. thing is though, I've only been in the school a month and I don't want to get a label as one of those "difficult" people... :(

Spangles, you're a godsend

Sorry to hear this treefrog, it sounds like a right 'mare. :(

We love you though, so everything is alright again. ;) :)
