Remembering 9/11

jeez - nino - relax!!!

you are gonna do yourself harm if you keep getting so upset over something as trivial as a thread

:(

Stop it, you're making a complete fool of yourself (not that it's difficult in your case).

What I find so amusing is the cod advice that you're offering me. :D

Btw, I remember your comments on the 911 part thread that your chum Canuck started. I've got your number. ;)

So, it would have been okay for one of them to start a thread with the same title and talk solely about Sept 11, 2001 (which they would have done btw)?

I have my reasons for giving this thread the title that it has: the date has been monopolised by certain sections of US society and, while they forget how deeply involved their country was in the bloody coup of 1973, it is important to remind them that they aren't the only folk who should remember this date.

Btw, there was a thread started that had the same title in General about 3 years ago. No one got into a tiswas about it then, so what's the problem now?

The only person in a tiswas is you. Your thread title wasn't clear and when someone misunderstood your purpose you were unneccessarily insulting.

I'm not objecting to you starting a thread about General Pinochet. I am objecting to you jumping down someone's throat for misunderstanding your deliberately ambiguous thread title.

Have a look at the OP instead of nitpicking. It's funny how a least 3 other posters had no problem with the thread title but you, dilute and peeper do. Odd that.

What I object to are people thinking that they can tell me what title I should give a thread.

Oh and I'm not "jumping down" anyone's "throat". That's just histrionic bullshit.

Btw, did you bother to read my last post properly? No. Because if you had, you'd have noticed this:

Instead of seizing on a single word.

The Junta the 'Free World' chose to back on that infamous day

uh...what's this argument about?

The fact that I started a thread about the other 9/11. I think what some people object to is the fact that I ignored Sept 11, 2001 and opened by talking about the Chile Coup of 1973, which many Americans either ignore or forget. This is the reason for the thread and accusations that the title is misleading are specious.

This thread's about the Chilean 9/11, I think. This from the OP ...
It was on this day in 1973 that General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte seized power in a bloody coup. The democratically elected president, Salvador Allende was killed and the years that followed were brutally repressive: thousands of political opponents were rounded up and either killed or disappeared.

Exactly 50% of the respondents then.

What I object to are people thinking that they can tell me what title I should give a thread.

Call your thread whatever you want, but if people misunderstand it don't insult them for your ambiguity.

 at accusations of histrionics. They misunderstood the purpose of your thread - your reaction is to have a go at start a slanging match.

Yes I did.

If you have nothing else to offer, then leave the thread.

I'm sorry that you feel upset by those of us who want to remember what the US did to Chile through Pinochet.

Laughable. Talk about trying to dig yourself out of a hole.

The fact that I started a thread about an other 9/11.
fixed your post

If you think that then you're wiiiide of the mark imo

uh...what's this argument about?

Started out as a thread marking the anniversary of the CIA-backed coup that deposed Allende in Chile, then got a bit muddled as other historical events that happened on September 11 got posted up by people apparently believing it takes all the other events on that day in history combined to match the historical importance of the assault on Canada's noble neighbour to the south.

No. What I object to is you jumping down people's throats for misunderstanding your intention with this thread.

well...i always will see 9/11 as my gf's bro's birthday.

it's a stinker of a day to celebrate...cos on this day it's a moral crime to be happy

No. I am neither sentimental about the WTC nor unmoved by atrocities carried out by Pinochet.

But I do have nothing else to offer this thread. More and more posts where I say that what I'm objecting to is you being rude when someone has posted about an event that happened on 11th September that you weren't interested in, followed by you posting that my objections to that are in fact me being upset at you talking about Pinochet seem a little pointless.

It's my flatmate's birthday too, Charlie. :)

Er, what does this have to do with the thread?

Thanks for the derail. Tosser.

one could be forgiven for thinking this thread might be about remembering all (or a selection of all) the majorly bad things that have happened on september 11th over the years, to put the september 11th 2001 attacks into some sort of historical context.

That IMO would be a good thread, and one in which spring peepers post would be entirely relevant.

I guess in future if you want to set specific parameters about what can be discussed on a thread you start you maybe ought to make this a bit clearer in your OP, rather than dishing out needless abuse when someone hasn't managed to read your unwritten intentions.

history didn't start in 2001 as some american commentators would have it, but it also didn't start in 1973.

Two good reasons to commemorate the 11th of september:

1944: The invasion of Germany from the West begins as Allied troops cross the Luxembourg-German border.

1997: Voters in Scotland approve the creation of a Scottish parliament in a national referendum.

Didn't we have this exact same thread with the exact same posts last year?
Think we've been remembering the overthrow of the Chilean regime in 1973 every year for the last 6 years. Don't recall any threads remembering it prior to 2001, but then again, I wasn't a member, so I'm sure there was a thread in 2000 as well...

a hardy annual of a thread, perhaps as regular as the annual Poppy bunfight.
