Registry Office wedding-yay or nay?

You'll have a great day where ever you have your wedding. We got married in a church which turned out to be a bit of a hassle as you've got to get your bands read etc before hand.

Have a fantastic day! :cool:

Been engaged for a few years now-never got around to sorting out wedding (civil) due to crapness, our families being on opposite sides of the UK etc-anyway, thinking of a registry office wedding now as my mum wants to invite lots of relatives I either don't know or am not that fond of. Also seems silly to spend upwards of a grand on hiring a lovely place for a few hours when not that many people will be attending as to invite some relatives and friends but not all might cause upset and we don't want and can't afford a full blown affair, just pieminister pies and mash and close relatives and friends.
Anyway-what is a registry office wedding like? Is it five minutes sat on plastic chairs in a small room? Have you had one and regretted it? The one in lancaster looks quite nice from the sounds of it on the net but can't find any pics.
Anyway, any advice, anecdotes etc more than welcome!

No offence intended, but what's it got to do with your mum? It's your day and you should do whatever you like and invite whoever you like.

The register office weddings I've been to (in Gloucester and Bristol) have been very nice, intimate occasions. As a guest I prefer them to church weddings.

Lancaster Registry Office is lovely, I've been to a few weddings there. The room is a reasonable size but you might struggle to fit all of Urban in there. :p The "courtyard garden" was more of a car park last time I was there but if you go on to somewhere else afterwards you can pick somewhere better for photos.

I'm available for ferrying guests round at reasonable rates*

* a pint of scrumpy

Not sure if the combination is sensible-unless it's my mother you're driving:hmm::D
Decided on registry office now-just have to get everything else sorted...meh.

We wanted a quiet wedding too and got married last year on the Isles of Scilly in their registry office on St Marys- it's right on the beach and as you get married you look out over the beach and sea (although it also doubles as a public shelter and has public loos round the back) ! The place only takes 8 people including bride and groom so is easy to cut down on the numbers ;) .... Our reception involved heading off to see the seals on a boat and spent the night in a castle on the island. Would never regret getting married there. Saying that the Isles of Scilly does have a special meaning for us anyway from before our marriage so it might not be the same.
