Reggae label to hold "straight pride" publicity stunt

because you said
1. you are 'proud' to be white and 'straight'
2. 'coloured' hatehate hate that word

3. still wriggling and won't explain your pride, which can't mean that much if you can't articulate it
no?
did you miss this?
and you havent explained why you think im a cunt?

I'm not being abusive to you

or does it take a while for that thick skull to digest stuff.

If a black man says he's proud to be black, you know it's in reponse to centuries of being told he's less than the white man.

It's no more or less meaningless than saying 'I'm proud to be white' tho.

Fair enough, I thought we were heading back to the 60s with all this proud to be white stuff, I got carried away and I take it back.

I still think it's a misnomer to be proud to be white. If a black man says he's proud to be black, you know it's in reponse to centuries of being told he's less than the white man.
If a white man says he's proud to be white, you say 'for what?', 'why?' and you still haven't answered that question. What exactly makes you proud to be white and straight? Because someone standing at the top of the pile shouting out how proud they are to be there sounds like a conceited pompous idiot.

the opposite of being proud is to be ashamed, so my choice is one of the 2!
i choose pride.

i dont associate MY pride with the BNP pricks etc, i think some of you lot should do the same.
By me saying Im proud of what i am

no matter what i am/was i'd br proud!

even if i was french! ;)

Why does it have to be a matter of polar opposites though? My keyboard is black with white lettering, I feel neither pride nor shame about that.

because i choose to be happy and embrace who/what i am!

I love the person i have turned out to be.

If i was welsh i'd be proud etc.

I dont see why its a big deal.

Like i have said there is no point in going on a march to celebrate!

but i feel EVERYTHING good in life should be celebrated, including breathing, the lot!

and thats my choice!

Well as pride is usually in response to low-self-esteem, it isn't ideal in any situation. I'm saying you can understand it when gay and black people say it, they're not saying they're better than you, they're saying I shouldn't feel less because the majority arent' like me or don't like me.
When a white person or straight person tries to 'take off' that same line with 'well I'm proud to be white too' it just sounds risible to me. It sounds like they're saying 'white people are better' which is prides normal definition.

It's not a question of meaning but how it gets construed - proud usually means 'better than the others'.

hoho! so it is some misguided superiority that you base your pride on is it?

My problem is that pride in it's normal usage is in response to being ashamed or not anyway. You're right - it's the opposite of ashamed, but it's still low self-esteem in another coat.

Be happy who you are, no need to get prideful about it, and appropriating the slogans of oppressed minorities is pretty low. Saying 'Proud to be white' or 'Proud to be straight', sounds like you're setting yourself up in opposition to them.

well good for you but why has it got anything at all to do with being white or straight???
being a Welsh i can try and answer that by saying that i'm proud to be Welsh despite the engerlish trying to crush us and at least we got some culture :D
everything good? except the french of course! is Jeremy Clarkson your idol? what jappery!
of course it's your choice, who's saying it ain't?? don't make you less of a cunt tho do it

Why am I proud to be white?

Well, the philosophers who wrote during the Enlightenment, who's words actually led directly to the whole notion of equality and helped pave the way for this debate to actually be happening, were white and mostly straight.

They weren't you though, so why you taking credit?

I'd suggest you think very carefully about the next thing you post. The philosophers of the Enlightenment (who were merely philosophising about something that was happening around them anyway) would like that.

Doesn't matter. This is about explaining why I'm proud to be white.

TBH, I'm using it as an explanation why I personally find the idea of 'Pride' based on a single physiological aspect of oneself to be ridiculous and disempowering. I know why it happens, and I understand the reasons for it, but I think it demeans and limits people, and can lead to more stereotyping.

But hey, I'd like to see a world where people are judged on what they do, rather than what they are but y'know.

Can't believe we're having this debate. Utterly utterly depressing.

I've got size 11 feet. Are my options to

a) go on a Size 11 feet Pride March
b) Be ashamed of them?

Fuck's sake

However,if there was a history of oppression and prejudice based on shoe size, it's a different story

got it in one

ps: people can say proud and *adjective* if they like.

Thought the OP was of some interest, as it illustrates the way the appeal of Jamaican music has probably declined among many white listeners since around the mid 1980s. Doubtless TCOOO Productions won't be particularly worried about that though.

It has, but for a myriad of reasons too complicated to go into here (mainly based on what was perceived by many as the decline of reggae when it went digital).

There's a shitload of homophobia in hip hop as well.

well, I'd say that it indicates that you somehow feel that you need to celebrate heterosexuality and would be inclined to ask why, in a society based on the sanctified notion of heterosexuality, do you feel the need?

There's no shame in a little pride, but this isn't really about pride. The gay proud are probably the only group who claim pride without it being a thinly disguised form of hate.

There's a big gap between the concept of pride, which is generally acceptable, and the reality. Or with this event, as Mrs Me asks; "Don't people have better things to do with their time?"
