Redstar closing down again then.

Whatever happens, lets hope the next lot sort out the stairs so you don't have to practically exit the place to go upstairs. I'm sure that was the reason for upstairs being nearly empty so often despite some great music being played. The set up didn't exactly encourage people to wander from room to room.

Unsound tried to change the stairs layout by making them accessible from the main dancefloor. The council turned up and said it was against the terms of the licence (maybe something to do with fire exits?) so they were changed back.

if there's only one stair access to upstairs then it has to function as the fire exit. That means not leading through the main downstairs room.

What's the Junction doing these days?
The old Junction is most certainly dead. The old pub has been extensively refurbished, with the upstairs and the 'side' buildings turned into flats.

The (reduced) pub part remains unopened and is unlikely to find many many people looking to take it over seeing as there's now so many restrictions on noise/hours.
If it was such a good prospect, it wouldn't have been up for sale three or four times in the past ten years and "good promoters" would be falling over themselves to get hold of a central London five hundred+ capacity venue.
Well, it's not just about the promoters; it's also about any licensing/noise restrictions and the attitude of the owners - and whether they want to invest in the pub.

Look what happened to the Hobgoblin. That was sliding further and further downhill towards an inevitable closure and now it's been turned into a bustling venue. Although the Redstar's location isn't perfect, a fair few venues located away from tube stations still manage to thrive, and the Redstar's certainly got a lot going for it in terms of space and potential.

Ok, I see.

Lets hope the next lot sort out the stairs then. Another staircase is required.

No there is another staircase from the upstairs room, which is a designated fire exit. We didn't actually move a door, rather opened a doorway up in the back of the main room to allow access to upstairs. This actually made the place safer re fire as beforehand it would have been possible to be trapped in the back of the room. The health and safety officer actually agreed that in practice it would be safer, but as we hadn't applied for the change, the licensing officer dis-allowed it and we wound up replacing the wall. It was partly the attitude of the council (amongst many other things) that helped with our decision to leave (we weren't really made for each other anyway;))

I would be very surprised if there's anyone rushing to get hold of the Redstar, even if recession was not on the cards. The place was described to me by some extremely successful promoters as a turkey, and tbh I have to agree.

Bring back the strippers from the Father Redcap days, that will pack them in, or not as the case may be. :)

It's 'Planet Nollywood' now (Nigeria's hollywood apparently). Big happy events most weekends from what I can see. The place looks revived and busy, possibly a rather different vibe than in the past, but better than the decaying underused place it almost became. I miss the Red Star but this Nollywood effort is a good one as far as I can tell.

Blimey, from Unsound vibe to Nigerian vibe, how things change!

Glad it's not been completely given up on as a venue though.
