Redecorating

the wallpaper in a couple of my rooms is starting to peel but underneath is the lath and plaster ceiling - if I even attempt to sort the paper the ceiling is going to fall down :D structural paper :D

*gets out superglue*

So that got me wondering earlier why isn't there like a Weight Watchers equivalent for DIY where you have to go every week for a progress report, so you get 'shamed' into doing some work between meetings or else you'd have to admit to having achieved nothing. And they could give you decorating tips and you could have a D I Y buddy to motivate you when it was all getting too much or you couldn't be arsed.

This is not a silly idea :)
DIY buddies to shame you, advise you and help you with big jobs
Like a big DIY co-op.
Anybody want to paint my bathroom? :D

We have so much that we want to do.

Kitchen-strip wood, paint walls.
Dining room-paint/wallpaper
Hall/landing-strip wood on skirting boards/door frames/staircase (this was started 4 months ago but nothing has happened since :hmm:) and paint walls.
Bathroom-paint and replace flooring
Carpets cleaned in most of house
Front door to be painted
Porch walls to be painted

We don't own the house but will be here for the forseeable future so don't mind spending time doing stuff because we can see what a gorgeous house it could be. It's all ok and apart from a couple of bits my landlady needs to do it's purely cosmetic.

My problem is that the whole house needs plastering before we can do anything else, and the thoughts of that level of upheaval makes me feel sick.
Yeah, it's all the stuff that you have to do *before* the final 'Ooh once this paint goes on it's going to look fabulous' stage that makes it all seem like you're at the bottom of a very large and steep insurmountable mountain. If it was just a matter of the choosing colours and soft furnishings and coordinating the other decorative touches it would be a doddle, but it's all the un-fun stuff you have to do before the fun stuff that makes it such a drag.

^^yes. woodchip. *shudders*
shiftyjunior has been pcking the woodchip wallpaper off his wall and so it will all need to be pulled off and painted. the wall is painted a hideous colour under the wallpaper... it's a nightmare.

Well, I've finished one of the spare bedrooms. Hurrah! But realised I didn't get the paint for the sitting room walls - I was dithering over colours and thought I'd decided and put it in the trolley, but in hindsight on my way back I was distracted by kitchen paint. :o

So, urban peeps motivate me. What next? I did half of the woodwork in the hallway while that paint pot was open, but should I do the kitchen or the hallway walls next?

How bad are your cupboard doors, Shiftybaglady? Mine were formica-y stuff and knackered but they would cost over £500 to replace, which I didn't have (if I wanted any flooring at all in the flat) There's stuff called ESP (extra special Primer) for about £20 that you wipe over any cleaned surface, and when it's dried, you can paint on top of it - the primer stuff bonds really well. I did this, with a gloss roller, and my kitchen units look brand new.

(well, they did six years ago when I last painted - still trying to summon up the enthusiasm to do them again!)

That sounds like pretty good stuff Ceej, I canthink of a few jobs I could use that for in fact...
My main problem with my cupboard doors is the handles, they have these built in metal handles that are not only very ugly but also collect every passing crumb and are just awful
I can afford the doors, I think I will just get on and do that. Going to start with the bathroom as it's tiny. Then the hallway.
The big jobs like doing Shiftyjuniors room and the kitchen will have to wait as I will definitely need help.
I'll order a sample door though, I will probably go for some plain white doors after all, anything else might just look ridiculous with my counter... hmm.

shiftybaglady, instead of leaving it as a vague 'I'm going to do the bathroom first' make a list of everything you need to do it, set a target day for going to B&Q or Homebase or wherever. And then set a day or weekend for doing it. If you commit to it happening you're more likely to do it.

Use a good quallity border adhesive :)

Anyone else doing house stuff today?

What are you up to, Pip?

I'm doing neither the hallway or the kitchen, I'm clearing and sorting out the other spare bedroom, which has basically been the junk room.

I've been ruthless. Instead of flicking through every old magazine, which is what I'd normally do, taking ages, I've just been dividing them into three piles. Property p0rn, keep; really old, recycling pile; not so old, pile to take to doctor's surgery for waiting room.

I'm a bit of a hoarder by nature, and while I've got a better grip on that now where newspapers are concerned, I'm quite bad at keeping stacks of magazines. Seeing then all like that makes of realise what a scary amount of money I waste on buying magazines. I could have bought a nice piece of furniture or three over the part few years. :(

MOAR painting. I'm just waiting for a coat to dry a bit then I'm back at it. I wanted to paint my wardrobe, but I can't find my masking tape. I gave it a good sand though.

Great gains made today, I reckon I can possibly finish it off on Monday, or tomorrow if I don't go to Southend

Then it's just my my kitchen to do, wardrobe to paint, and floor to sand and oil. Woo!

Good going Pip. Are you coming to do mine next then? (what's mine is yours you see...)
I dragged Shiftyjunior up to look at flooring but it wasn't a success. Truth is I'll get much more done when he's back at school.
I did pick up a copy of marks and speners homeware brochure.
My fucking kettle broke today  how is one supposed to relax with decorating porn without a cup of tea?

Oh and AnnO' I know what you mean about hoarding. I've scaled back on it though. I now have some neat boxes under my bed that I stuff things in that I think I'll need in future, when they start overflowing it proves me wrong.
I have loads of tat in the kitchen though. I will make a list.

Has anyone else got wallpapered ceilings in their house? They are in most of the rooms in this place. Most odd.

The boys have peeled some of it off in one of their bedrooms so it looks a right state but I fear that if I remove it, the whole ceiling will need replastering. :hmm:

I'm still thinking about tackling the dining room, then the teens room needs doing but that is a 'big' job and then the living room needs freshening up.

I'm going to wait till they are back at school though or they will want to 'help'. :(

I do. Not just any old wallpaper, this is hideous woodchip:( I simply cannot be arsed to rip it all down and like you I'm afraid of what lurks underneath.
Could be worse though, could be those god awful ceiling tiles.

In my flat there was already woodchip wallpaper on the ceiling in the sitting room and kitchen. The mind boggles. I think one of the other bedrooms might also have had a papered ceiling at some point, because although it's painted, it's not a smooth surface, it looks like it's had paper stripped off.

I'm just about to give them a lick of paint, but when I get round to properly renovating the place it's got to come off and I don't imagine it's going to be easy.

I don't reckon the ceiling's going to come off in chunks with the paper when I get round to it. I hope not.

Ta

I got distracted by a cheeky boozy lunch, but I'm cracking on now. Just waiting for a coat to dry :) :hmm:

ooh, we're on a roll now!

Today I painted my kitchen ceiling, and I painted my hallway.

Tomorrow, I'll probably paint the kitchen walls, paint the kitchen woodwork, and paint the last three doors in the hallway.

If I manage to get that done tomorrow, I'll just need to paint the window frame in the other spare bedroom, and also the whole of the sitting room.

This is all just a cosmetic paint job though, just making do till I have enough money to do the windows, central heating and electrics and once those are done, I'll redecorate again, properly.

It gets easier once you've made a start. The more progress, the more of a difference you can see, and the closer you get to 'the finish line'.

And it helps to have a deadline in mind. I wanted to get it all done before I went to Shambala, because the weekend after that is my birthday, and then after that I'm hoping to sent the two spare bedrooms to a couple of language students.

I am living in house hell. I am bored with choosing stuff. I don't care about the tiles in my kitchen, I don't care what the lights look like or what colour the walls are. I just want it finished

Yeah that's true. Although yesterday I was overwhelmed with paint fumes and went on stayed on my mum's sofa like a stupid baby :D

Trashpony, when are you expecting it to be finished?

I painted half my kitchen in buttermilk paint today, but then I had to go out. I'm going to finish the walls tonight, after watching The Day After Tomorrow. Don't know if I'll manage to finish the woodwork today as well though.

Hurrah! I now have a buttermilk kitchen.

The ceiling and wall are done, now I just need to paint the woodwork white.

And while I'm doing that I've got to finish the hallway woodwork.

And then the sitting room. And also I need to whitewash the balcony walls.

Progress. Yay! :)

Are you back at your place now Pip?

I've been keeping the balcony door and windows open. Didn't think about fumes, tbh, :o I just thought the paint would dry quicker. What colour have you gone for?

I have painted the sitting room ceiling and walls. Just need to do the skirting board and door/door frame and window frames.

I have painted half of the kitchen floor. Painting the walls and woodwork really brightened up the kitchen and made the floor look really shabby. The dark brown vinyl tiles had been painted a sandy/taupe colour by the previous tenants and were now scuffed and scruffy looking, even more so with the contrast to the fresh, clean walls. I didn't want to redo the floor before next year (when I plan to rip out the kitchen and redesign it), so I figured I should just repaint the floor. I'm doing it in a black and white chequerboard pattern. It seemed like a really good idea at the time. But it's taking me aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages to mask off all the individual squares. And I'm not doing them all in one go, because I won't be able to do that because of the masking tape and also because I wouldn't be able to walk across the floor, so I'm doing it bit by bit. It's looking good so far though.

So, the end is in sight.

My sitting room is looking a bit bare and bland though, the walls are now cotton white. I have a set of three mirrored flying doves over the fire in homage to my penchant for kitsch. And an enlarged photo of a French chap in a beret on a bike. Not sure what else to do with it.
