Red Wine

Viña Albali is from La Mancha, not Rioja... but you couldn't tell the difference. Nicely aged in American oak and a very agreeable red wine- and fucking good value for money as well- about £4.90 from Sainsbury's, or £3.80 from Threshers with the 3 x 2 offer.

Otherwise the Faustinos are nice and smooth. Faustino VII costs around £6 and it's pleasant enough; Faustino V will set you back nearly a tenner but boy is it good... :)

I agree that Barbera is a very nice wine indeed. On a recent trip to Rome we had some fantastic Italian wines chosen by our waiters, because I don't know much about Italian wine.

At home we mostly drink French wine, bought on bi-annual trips to France. We usually go to a specialist wine shop in a small town not far from Boulogne, where the owner will point is in the direction of some decent wine at good prices.

I really like wine from the Languedoc/Roussillon region, which is quite full-bodied, and much better value than Burgundy, say, or Bordeaux. My absolute favourite is still Burgundy, but it tends to be pricey.

It is Guinness. I live in the middle of Gascogny, and I've never seen French wine for less than 1 litre per Euro, and a lot of that has been Spanish or Italian.

I think Tobes may be exagerating. But I forgive him because he clearly likes the French.

Exaggerating about what. We bought back 36 1.5 litre cartons of red wine at 1 euro each at the start of November. The red plonk in cartons is always dirt cheap.

Well you did well, it's 85 eurocents a litre 'on the pump' in our cave-cooperative.

I can't argue with that, (but a least they get happy drunk). :D

the french word for lesbian in popular language is gouine. it is reckoned that the origin lie in the word gwin or wine in breton, because breton women emigrants living in Paris would get rat arsed on wine and fall asleep together back home. breton men never had any problems getting home after a day in the market or wherever, the horse would know the way...

Yeah I'm a tempranillo/rioja bod meself. Although I've had many a nice bottle of Montepulciano d'Abbruzzo too - that's been a safe bet ime. Strongly recommended. £5/6 seems to land you a very decent bottle of the stuff nearly every time.

e2a: Yes, imo Bin 28 is fantastic stuff - huge, massive, giant, naughty and luscious. etc etc. It's actually better than Bin 128 imo - it's got a bit more earthiness and complexity and stuff in what it tastes like and that.

35 South - Cabernet Sauvignon. That's a nice wee Red. :)
my flatmate loves that and it's 3.50 or maybe even less at morrisons at the moment..i'm currently enjoying not in moderation kumala's zenith shiraz, £7.99 but bogof from Morrisons..the problem is that it is far too smooth, delicious and drinkable and theres two bottles, not just one and it's Monday tomorrow :(

just noticed that Asda are selling a box tempranillo for £13...1st time I have come across a decent red in a box.

The Lidl Navarra is surprisingly good for the price, 2.99 I think.

Navarra is the region next to Rioja so if you like the one, you'll most likely enjoy the other.

Chateau Neuf De Pape is only £6.49 from Tesco at the mo.
There's a nice Chilean Pinot Noir about called Con Sur.

Careful though. The fact that it is made from the Tempranillo grape variety is no guarantee of quality whatsoever.
