Red wine...

I'll have to try that - I don't normally trust wines that cost less than a fiver (though I usually by bin ends that are half price at Tesco)

It's a nice table wine, nothing fancy. There's too types, one is slightly more expensive (£3.99) but nicer. La Chasse du Pape is around a fiver.

I'm a big new world fan, the French are woefully behind on consistency, marketing and to some extent technique. Italians and Spanish a bit more sussed but occasionally iffy, some real E Europe bargains to be had but also some shockers.

Massive Aussie Shiraz drinker, which will give all the body and chocolate you could wish for, but I avoid the major producers on the whole. That said Penfolds and Wolf Blass are always consistent.

CNdP is for special occasions or flash fuckers with too much disposable. ;)

Also rather partial to a Cali Zinfandel, Fetzer's is nice for about £6.50, and a Cape Pinotage is usually about half to a third of the price of a French Pinot Noir of similar quailty.

Oi!

Instead of drinking 5 or 6 pints down the pub, I might just have a bottle of "CNdP" at home :p

Australian Red Wine can go fuck itself.
I wish the French would bring their prices down - their arrogance is costing them their livelihoods.

Yeah mon, shame about the Lofty price tags on yer French grape, they need to smell the coffee innit

We drink a lot of wine from Languedoc-Roussillon in this house. I like French wine the best, and you get a lot of bang for your buck with this region (especially if you buy it in France).

I also like Cotes du Rhone and Burgundy (pricey, though). Rioja is also good, and I've had some nice Italian reds, but only in Italy following recommendations from waiters, and I can't for the life of me remember what any of them are.

I wish I could remember the names of wines, I stand at the wine section in Tescos scratching my melon as to what that last one I had that was nice is called and always end up going for the one with the least bottles left, just cos if its popular it must be nice right?

Never is :(

This is a very nice one (clickable image)...

...and is great fun to order in restaurants :D. It's pretty much as good as a Barolo, but rather cheaper.

fairynuff, I'm just jealous cos I can't justify it to myself

three kids and a fuck-off mortgage have got a lot to answer for :)

I just get jealous of the people who go on about how great buying wine in France is, "oh we just pop over there once or twice a year".

But then, the bloke who has the shop across the road does it and we get the benefit anyway :D

If you drink a lot of wine (and don't live 300 miles from Dover like me), it's well worth going over to France. We've been drinking an absolutely bloody lovely Cahors, which we paid €2.70 for (about two quid). If they'd have enough of it, and we'd had room in the car, I'd have happily brought six months' supply back, the difference in price being easily enough to cover at least the cost of the ferry journey.

The sort of wine you'd get over here for two quid would be unlikely to be drinkable - and this stuff was...well, from the taste of it, I'd have been expecting to pay £6-8/bottle for it over here, and it retails in the US for $13.

just got this via email...

Grenache Shiraz is mighty fine for around 4-6 squid.

I had a bottle of Chorey Les Beaune this weekend, which I bought for myself as a treat after many months of sobriety. It was lush, with a big smooth raspberry kick. I would drink it all the time if it weren't so expensive.

I can recommend the Lidl Navarra, £2.49/bottle. Big fat meaty red, benefits from not being too chilly, and I'd swear that a couple of hours' chambreing makes all the difference, too...

Hey I agree. I thought nothing good was to be had under £3 until I found the Lidl wines. Just had some Chilean Cab Sav 2004 Cimarosa £2.99 after given some air it woke up. Load up on it for Christmas.
