Red Wine Recommendations

M&S wine, in my previous experience (before I started boycotting them over Palestine), were very overpriced for the quality you bought. For example, you'd buy a cheap bottle of Bulgarian/Chilean or something plonk in there that would be the kind of standard you'd pay £2.99 for elsewhere, and in Marks you'd pay £4.99 for a bottle of not very drinkable plonk.

You get more for your money if you buy elsewhere, and that's ethical considerations aside.

How much are you looking to spend? I'd go to somewhere like Oddbins, where the staff get to do some tasting and get educated about their product lines, they are very helpful. I bought a lovely bottle of Spanish Rioja for just under £30.00 recently as a gift for someone. But they have all price ranges in there.

Actually, don't know what recent vintages are like, but I know that there was a highly regarded Lebanese wine. Ah, here it is (courtesy of Google) Chateau Musar: http://www.chateaumusar.com.lb/

Supposed (according to oenophiles) to be very quaffable, I bought a magnum for a friend's 21st.

It's good stuff. Different from what I'm used to. Not sure if it's the sort of thing you sit and drink though. Probably best with food

I'll admit I'm no connoisseur, but I'm half-way through a bottle of Banrock Station's Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, and even if it's full of anti-freeze or whatever, it's going down very nicely. :)

Tastes all the sweeter 'cos it's currently half price in Sainsburys (£7.99 down to £3.99).

I'm amazed Banrock is being touted at 7.99!!

gracing the table chez reg at present are two hefty offerings from borie de maurel, via oddbins:

a 2003 mourvedre at £14.99, product12317 and a 2000 carignan at £7.99, product 12310

plus a 2004 cheeky syrah/grenache/carignan blend at £6.99, product 12397

all good summer drinking
