Recycling in your area

Where I used to live in Hounslow we had a service that took all paper and card, cans and tins, all glass types, material, shoes, engine oil and batteries from the front door in one box. About the only recyclable thing they didn't take was plastic; that had to go to local depots instead.

Now I live in Surrey and the service is much more complex and, imo, shite in comparison. Green, brown or clear glass, certain types of plastic and white paper (but no cardboard or brown (or any other colour) paper). Everything else goes to the tip to be recycled. A real pain in the butt, especially cardboard. There is a silly amount of cardboard in packaging.

I'm in the Scottish Borders.

The council supplies one wheely bin for non-recylable waste, a compost bin in the garden for compostable stuff, clear bags for tin cans and plastic bottles (only take PET and HDPE plastics though) and purple bags for paper and cardboard. All of it (except the compost bin!) is collected weekly. We live in a very rural area with a big garden, in the towns people are given a 'garden waste' wheely bin which the council collects fornightly in the summer and composts at a big central collection site. They don't collect glass which is a bit of a pain but I save it up and take it to the bottle banks in town about once a month.

Me too, but I think that's because we live 3/4 miles outta town. They have green boxes in the town for glass, paper, cans, and plastics. Sometimes I shove stuff in my gran's box, sometimes I just shove it all in the shed and then need to do a clearout(which takes aaaages)

Trashy, do you really *heart* Camden?? Do you *heart* their parking policy? ;)

I'd forgotten about that :o :(

Lambeth will take glass, paper, cardboard, tins, cans and plastics, unsorted. Christ knows what they do with it al though. Probably air frieght it to China, where it gets sorted by chained-up children with no shoes :(

According to this it goes to Kent - not sure whether the contractor uses chained up children or anothner source of cheap Labour.

I had thought it went from Smugglers Way to Kent by eco-friendly river barge, but it seems that it only goes there to be weighed before continuing from that riverside site to Kent by truck!

Recycling - where does it all go? - Western Riverside Waste Authority quicktime movie

When I was down in Somerset they separated recyclables at the kerbside into different ‘bins’ on the trucks when collecting, whereas here in Sussex it all goes into a normal dustcart (*ETA different cart to normal waste, but same dessign, if that makes sense) for separating later – I am not sure how well that works.

In Somerset, from personal experience, I know the separated recyclables are all bulked-up locally to be sent to various sites – only plastic I believe was being sent to China (on otherwise empty ships returning after dropping off manufactured goods from China), everything else was being dealt with in the UK.

Certainly in Somerset the system worked well for paper, card, plastic bottles, glass, tins, car batteries, tin foil, cloths, shoes and I understand they now collect kitchen scarps for composting too. Recycling truck comes around weekly and the ‘general’ waste is now only collected fortnightly with a ‘garden waste’ collection fortnightly too. WAY TO GO!

Haven’t a clue how it works here in Worthing with the ‘box’ system, I take my recyclables over to my mothers’ house in Arun district and use her wheelie bin, which takes paper/card/plastic bottles & tins. Glass still has to be taken to the bottle bank.

I have to say I find the systems in Arun & Worthing district sad compared with Somerset, having been involved in the past promoting recycling in Somerset.

Is recycling a con/ineffective?

I have some knowledge about recycling, having been contracted by councils in Somerset to run a team to promote recycling before I moved up to Sussex a couple of years ago.

I can confirm all materials collected down in Somerset were sold on for recycling, bringing in revenue and also saving on costs in respect of tipping charges and the ever increasing landfill tax.

As far as I am aware the cost in terms of energy used in recycling the likes of paper, glass, tins etc. is substantially less than working with ‘virgin’ raw materials.

There’s the added advantage of reducing the amount going into landfill sites, which are filling up fast – the costs of opening up new sites will be very high.

I hope people are not getting comfortable with consuming as much/more wasteful stuff as before – as the message (if it is getting across) is based on the three R’s : Reduce, Reuse and only than Recycle.

we had green boxes for recycling but they got nicked. tiny flats, y'see - with no room to keep them inside.

we then have one small grey wheelie bin for six flats - food waste and unrecyclables. if it doesn't fit in the bin (ie bin bags next to it), they won't take it.

Ellesmere port and neston :

1. green wheelie bin for domestic waste - picked up FORTNIGHTLY
1. Plastic bag for plastic containers-picked up FORTNIGHTLY
1. small stacker size box for card and glass bottles- picked up FORTNIGHTLY
1.small stacker size box for magazines- picked up FORTNIGHTLY

However add on to this .. binmens inability to empty bins. Us Living on main road and out early, home late.... Fact you can only take certain vehicles to the tip, and many need permits which prevent more regular tipping / re-cycling.

Our waste disposal services here are a JOKE!.. Luckily we often have a half empty bin at our warehouse where we can get rid of domestic rubbish. Also tiny kitchen makes re-cycling even harder... I often unpack my shopping at the supermarkets, and leave them with a lot of cardboard!

Caerphilly we have a green box, collected fortnightly which doesnt hold enough:rolleyes:
They are supposed to take paper, cardboard, glass, cans, batteries, clothes, engine oil , some types of plastic, shoes etc.( this is according to the recycling leaflet)
In practice they take glass, tin cans and paper and leave the rest. Unless you are included in the new pilot scheme which involves yet another box ( these people get stuff collected weekly)
Its rumoured they do get everything collected because the powers that be are checking.

Round here most people just chuck everything in the wheelie bins ( collected weekly) because of the headache recycling can be here ad so we didnt get included in the scheme etc etc etc
We end up taking everything to the dump and recycling that way

Recycling rate 28% locally - not bad at all - we produce less than a bag of crap for 5 people

Could be improved though with Camden style street bins for drink cans / bottles and paper..

Nothing - the local council, Haringey does to houses, but British Waterways doesn't provide any recycling facilities. So I either take it in a backpack to the supermarket or (in the case of plastic) save it up and wait 'til we go past Springfield in Hackney where theres a recycling bin for plastic, in the park there. When I lived in Palmers Green (Enfield Council) they were great - they recycled food waste, plastic, cans and metal, paper and cardboard. We seemed to hardly have to throw anything away.

we have great recycling

we have 2 large wheeley bins which are collected on alternative weeks, so once a fortnight our general waste is collected and the other week it's the recyclable stuff

in the recycling bin they take, plastic bottles, tin and paper, they do not take plastic food trays or glass

we argued with them about the food trays, they said that they could not get them recycled but we pointed out that the fab recycle machine at tescos recognises them and accepts them, they are now looking into it

what surprised me when this new scheme came in is the amount of recycling stuff we produce, our recycling bin is much fuller than our general waste bin

we have two bins in our house too, makes life much easier

tescos also give you green club card points for recycling but this is only if they have one of the new machines
