Record in Reason

The USB dongle plan for Record has caused a bit of a stink for some, and obviously there are many people who cant understand the excitement because it will add nothing to their workflow. But for some people, especially with an existing taste for Reason, this could be very interesting. I would give it a look but Ive wasted too many years parping around with different software instead of what Ive already got so I should stay committed to Ableton for now.

Didn't know it needed dongling. That's a bit shit.

I'll pay for it but will probably end up running a krack'd version if it means avoiding an ugly USB stick poking out of my Macbook Pro.

What a load of poo. I'm genuinely annoyed about that - I had no idea.

Damn this is good software. No USB key needed so far... but I'm on the Beta.

I think this will form the basis of Reason 5 - they've listened to the critics and are now chipping at the pro-market.

The mixer is now unreal. The window now goes fullscreen, instead of being locked at 2/3. The "analog" bits and audio routing is simplicity itself, with all the rear routing you know and love via the TAB key.

I'm dying to post screenshots and write a full review but I'd be in breach of contract if I do, and I don't want to fall foul of the Swedish connection!

Besides, I haven't even begun to explore the realtime effects and malarkey to do with syncing and virtual tracks, bouncing, etc.
All of which possible in seconds.

This latest update will hopefully coincide with the newest wave of Mac laptops - and indeed PC machines - using better and cheaper Core 2 configurations expected at the end of the year.

If they get this right - and bear in mind they're beta testing a good 7 months before a projected release date - this software could change the whole game.

Can't really blame them for wanting to protect the software via dongle though.

They've been milked for years. At the last seminar I went to, there was a show of hands... in a room of around 150 people only me and my colleague put our hands up when asked how many people had actually paid for it...

It's hardly super-expensive!!

I reckon a £300 charge and no major legit upgrade penalty (£70?) would mean those wishing to stick with a k'ed copy of R4 can stay there, and those looking to pay will then stick with this company forever, topping up the upgrades year on year like I do... Seriously - it is that good.

Gratuitous Record porn...

And here's exactly how it works with audio, from a tutorial released by Propellerhead.

Any idea if it supports VST or any other format plugins?

No, it's self contained, to make the most of your processing power.

You can of course take the soft synths into just about any decent sequencer that supports Rewire, thus blending in with any VST packages you're used to, and you can dictate tempo and stop/start via MIDI into it.

Seems to work OK when I've tried it - but then running two packages isn't ideal, which is why they have tried to implement full recording facilities within the Reason structure.

I have heard Record might not work on pre-Intel Macs though, and you'd need a pretty beefy PC to run it, dual core 2, etc. Which is a shame, because previous incarnations were able to be used on any old computer.

PK - questions!

1) For someone who won't be recording live music (maybe some vocals one day) but who is looking to make music through Reason, is Record still worth having for the added mastering, mixing and sequencing features?

2) Is the sequencer different/better than the one in Reason?

3) Looks from the screenshots that it is finally using a widescreen format and thus making use of all that dead space you get on a modern screen with a Reason rack. Is this something that back-translates to using vanilla Reason?

I am downloading the beta anyway, but it will take a wee while on my connection!

Oh and just to repeat, as it has now got lost off the last page - if anyone wants a beta key, I have two.

:)

Heh - fuck whether I need it or not, I am having a blast playing with it!

I am a total novice, but I am finding the granularity and flexibility of the new rack utterly brilliant and I am having a hoot with the new mastering tools and throwing all my reason midi instruments through new effects and amps.

I think for a hundred quid upgrade, I might consider it - just for fun.

:D

Oh and I know it is a very, very minor thing, but the inclusion of an on-screen/computer-keyboard midi-input device means that noodling and composing when traveling etc is suddenly possible.

I've used all the major sequencers and so far Record appears to knock the spots off them all in terms of setting up, recording, inserting effects, editing, time stretching, MIDI. It's so user friendly, which let's you focus on the music making instead of time wasted faffing around with software.

I might even buy this, which will be a first for me. ;)
