Recommend some Northern Soul for me

It's one of the first Northern tracks I ever heard. When I was a kid the fella who dj'ed at the youth club I went to was a Wigan Casino regular and he used to pop it on in between the punk and ska.... :D
I know a guy who plays it on guitar, and insists on singing every verse. He doesn't get many invites these days.

I too have a soft spot for Al Wilson's The Snake.

I think my all time favourite would be Turning My Heart beat Up by The MVPs

Although it is clearly past its hey day, there are still a few good nights to be had out there if you are in the know. I get the impression that most of those that go are old faces 'keeping the faith'. Can't comment on what they are like, not indulged for a good few years now.

I gather the scene has split in two now, the 'oldies' crowd, dancing the night away to the old classics, and 'newies', which is still about dancing to oldies, but unearthing rare tracks that have only recently been uncovered. Given how eletist the old scene was, the 'newies' tend to be REALLY rare.

The logic seems to be :
NEWIES: "Fed up of dancing to the same records for 30 years, want to listen to something new"
OLDIES: "The newie stuff is rare cos no-one wanted to listen to it when it was first released and it is still shite now it has been rediscovered"

Cheers for all the recommendations people. Im proper new to the genre (and Soul in general) so been finding it difficult to get hold of stuff which is distinctly Northern Soul as I dont really know what it is too well (am learning now though).

Got hold of the 'The Complete Introduction To Northern Soul' box set which I am thoroughly enjoying

Aha, think I've seen that one. Been coveting it for a while. Is it in a big box about 10" x 6"? What tunes on it are your faves?

There's another good one like that, 4 CD box set, 'Keeping the faith: 40 years of Northern Soul', comes in a beige case, with a booklet, Fopp are doing it for £18. Amongst many great tunes it has 'Don't be Sore at Me':
