Another one I like is David Lynch's The Straight Story, about a dying old fart's journey across Texas on a John Deere lawnmower.

Seconded, years since I last saw it but I recall it being good.

Two films by David Lynch Lost Highway and Wild at Heart are both classics if you don't mind a little weirdness.
Love and a .45 and Larry Clarke's film Another day in Paradise are also brilliant, but harder to get hold of.
