I got a 3 CD box set of Edith Piaf crooning on the weekend and its fantastic stuff, very french obviously, but tres sympatique to the other tunesters mentioned above.
to be fair, a lot of these suggestions while excellent singers (big up Mel Torme!) i don't think have the Lynchian edge that May's looking for, a kind of eerie cloying sentimentality - like Blue Velvet. They're a bit too smooth / straight - there is NOTHING eerie about Andy Williams, for example...
I think it'll be in the darker recesses of doowop and 50s pop you'll find these things, May..
Indeed, and all suggestions of that sort are also welcomed since I know nothing about doowop and would like to know more. However, I'm always interested in new listening of (almost) any kind, so will collect the list so far and send the mister out on a downloading mission via his super-speed work connection.
