Recommend me some comic books

Daredevil written and drawn by Frank Miller.

Miller at his absolute peak as a writer, before he went a bit bonkers – "Born Again" is probably my favourite comic story ever. Although his Batman Year One is pretty special, too. And David Mazzuchelli's art is brilliant on both.

I'd really recommend 'It's a good life if you don't weaken' by Seth. Its quite similar to Daniel Clowes's stuff in the way its quite melancholic and partly about how nostalgia for the past and obsessively collecting old records etc (as the main character in this book does) can be a way of avoiding the present, but like Clowes its also much funnier than the above makes it sound!

I'd second the Blankets recommendation and the same author (Craig Thompson's) comic book about his travels around Europe and North Africa, 'Carnet de Voyage' is also brilliant in the way it probes his insecurities and confusion while really showing his amazing drawing skills in the crowd scenes at Marrakesh etc.

Jeffrey Brown's 'Clumsy' is very sweet and touching about his on/off relationship.

Alison Bechdel's 'Fun Home' is a fantastic autobiographical comic about her very unusual childhood/relationship with her parents. Has lots of very posh literary allusions to Proust etc.

All Julie Doucet's stuff is worth reading too.

...is terrible. Typical facist mysoginist Miller. No thanks.

You can say that about some of Miller's work but I don't think it's true of Daredevil. Matt Murdock's a crusading, bleeding heart lawyer by day and defends the people of Hell's Kitchen by night. He's a champion of the oppressed.

I don't get the misogyny thing either - Elektra, for instance, is a strong, powerful female character who can't even be taken out of the game by her own death. Miller's take on the Black Widow is similarly impressive IIRC.

Just read the first Fables collection (Legends in Exile) last night, that was good.

Definitely you should read:
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
Sandman - Dream IS very punchable but I think the story's strong enough to overcome this
Preacher
Maus
The Boys (has anyone else read this?)

Your mum is for kids.

I got the Morrison X-Men in collected form recently, and they just confirm my impression that he's far better when not allowed to just ramble on on his own, and kept to an existing mythos.

Girls by the Luna Brothers. Possibly the weirdest alien invasion story I've ever seen in any medium.

Their follow-up The Sword is pretty good, too.

I think someone did but I've only just looked it up.

I fucking love zombies and apocalypses. I want it.

That sounded facetious, it wasn't meant to be. I genuinely love Zombies and apocalypses.

I have got books 1-4, just waiting for 5 to come out now. Yours to borrow next time you are about.

Mr QofG's - apart from From Hell, Maus and Watchmen which have already been mentioned -recommends

Marvel Zombies
Neil Gaiman's 1602

He agrees - I think it is the sheer Zombieness he likes (he has spent much of this morning playing "House of the Dead: Overkill" and giggling like a Japanese schoolgirl with a large gun!)

Yeah, it is still wicked to see all those characters acting debased etc, but Walking Dead is the ticket for real development etc.

I used to get Crisis and Deadline - always get them muddled up in my head though.

That must be because they are both equally THE MOST IRRITATING THINGS EVER, sorry but it's true. I can't believe I read that shit at the time.

Bill Sienkowitz anyone? Please?

Not many people have mentioned Watchmen. Is that because it's too obvious?

I reckon alot of really self conscious 'comic book' people feel that way- like it's too popular to admit you liked it :D

Watchmen is brilliant, as is V for Vendetta. Ignore the films.
