Recommend me some comic books

oh: old school classic with a female lead who isn't the normal 'big boob kickass' comic book stereotype:

The Ballad of Halo Jones.

Stone cold classic

This ^^^^

Halo Jones is a classic, a bit sci-fi, but great characters and story, and beautiful art...

Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic ones are quite good... I like some of the Sandman stuff but I just find the main character too punchable to get really into them. Another vote for the Preacher series here too.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Maybe a bit old-fashioned now but I used to love them.

The comic book version of Neil Gaiman's 'Neverwhere' is also delicious, especially if you're familiar with London...

akira
transmetropolitan
100 bullets
from hell
league of extraordinary gentlemen

all get big thumbs up from me, also check out freakangels. it's free, online, one episode a week by the writer of transmet.

from hell is worth the extra cash btw EG - it's a substantial tome, and will keep you going much longer than most comic books...

Yeah. I lent my copy to the missus who'd never read a graphic novel before and she absolutely fell in love with it. Worth every penny of the forty dollars or so i paid for it.

I've always been bang on X-men tbh

Both Morrison's and Joss Whedon's run is fucking ace.

Warren Ellis is picking up from where Whedon left off on Astonishing X-Men - high hopes for a quality continuation.

I still think that Doom Patrol is actually Morrison's strongest and most coherent work - top stuff.

Stuff I've read recently...

Young Liars by David Lapham – just picked up the first trade and it's great. Thought it was all a bit contrived at first but as you get into it you realise that's kind of the point and that none of the main characters is at all what they seem.

The Filth – more madness from Grant Morrison, this time a 13-part series about, well, your guess is as good as mine really. See also Doom Patrol, which is my favourite series by Morrison.

Y The Last Man – just got the first four volumes (of 10) from the library and it's worth a read even though I don't think it's quite the classic others do. To be honest, I find some of its politics a bit iffy which kind of spoils it for me.

For my money, it gets no better than From Hell, with Maus second, maybe Watchmen third. A lot of leftfield choices in there, i am sure you will agree.
