Recommend me an American tv series

Mate of mine keeps waxing lyrical about "Sons of Anarchy", reckons its the best series on currently

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1124373/

I'll second, third, fourth or whatever is needed on that recommendation I had a few kittens last week when I realised the second series was well under way and did a big catch up all in one night

A nice undercurrent of malevolence that explodes nicely from time to time pervades this series

And this article

http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2009/oct/07/television-wire

has alerted to me previously unheard of shows that I now feel I need to download like Underbelly ,John in Cincinatti and that Eastbound one - -not heard of any them before but every other show namechecked on the page is in my top viewing over the last few years

30 Rock is the best comedy out there bar none. The Larry Sanders Show from the 90s is excellent satire too.

In case anyone missed it, The Wire is frigging amazing :D

I also fouind West Wing surprisingly well scripted, and some pretty cool characters to boot.

I have to ask is the phrase "I had a few kittens last week" a euphemism that I am unfamiliar with?

I liked the latest episode;

When Jax tries to break up the potential fight between Opie and AJ, so AJ kicks over Jax's harley, and thats all they wrote, no matter how level headed and calm Jax is, you do not fuck around with his bike

The article's central tenant is confirmed by your post. The show's you mention are the kind of show everyone downloads. I have torrented season 2-5 of the wire, I also own all five series on tv and have bought 4 more boxed sets as presents for people.

The thing about most really good US drama series is, if I like it I'll buy the TV series on DVD after I torrent it.

I've always known it to mean being overly excited as that was the context my mother always used it in but reading up on it years later it actually refers more to an anxiety based hysteria as opposed to the over excited state kids get into

I've used it in my more family traditonal sense here rather than the more accepted (and correct) usage.

...becuase they're good ;)

I tried to watch Carnivale, but it's fucking shite

Have you seen Six Feet Under? You probably have, but I've just finished the third season and am completely hooked.

ALF

I downloaded all 3 seasons a couple of months ago - appealing nostalgia and funny light comedy...

yeah, but stalled at the second series - need to give that another go, but s2 didn't compel me in the same way s1 did

Season 3? Of Mad Men? Not out, is it?

Being broadcast ATM. I think the 2nd season really builds on the first - the last 4 eps especially. S3 is even better.

I'll 5th 30 Rock - everyone bangs on about Tina Fey, but I reckon Alec Baldwin is the best thing about it.

Orang - there're loads of new series kicking off at the moment so might be worth looking at eztv/tv.com during the sweeps...

eztv.it - torrent site with loads of telly shows.

www.tv.com - basically imdb for the telly. Brilliant website with in depth season and ep guides etc etc, and good for trailing new shows.

The shield, if you havent done it yet. Just finished the last season. Brilliant ending, if perhaps over-acted at points, imo...

Have you seen any Dexter yet, the one about the serial killer of murderers who works as a blood spatter expert for Miami Police. 4th season just started in America a couple of weeks ago.
Thats quite good.

saw three episodes but it was on itv, so i forgot to watch it

ah, tis not a good idea to pay attention to ratings

No, but it is a good time to sample all the new dramas the big US networks put out - the ones that are still going come late November/December either 1. get good audience ratings or 2. have a fairy godmother somewhere in the network.

Anyhoo, the sweeps are a good time to check out loads of new shows.

Obv HBO isn't like this. Apparently, they don't start broadcasting until the filming is pretty much finished (as opposed to the broadcast networks, which keep shooting as the seasons progress) and their crtiteria for keeping a show are more based on viewer loyalty, long-term earnings potential and 'network prestige' - which is why they stuck with The Wire, despite it never getting massive audiences in the US.

It causes those little 'pings' in the head - like The Wire did - when the cocksucking metaphors and parallels and such become apparent. Loving the Rev and his tug-of-war eyes.
