Recommend me a vacuum cleaner

I bought a dyson this weekend - it was on offer in Costco. I have a dyson ball compact version. It felt like a bit of an indulgence, but I recently got new carpets I want to look after. I can't comment on whether it's any good yet but it's incredibly light and the ball version seemed like it would be good for moving around furniture in a relatively small flat.

I'm now a bit worried about the wool thing though as my carpets are wool. They're looped though rather than tufted - will that make a difference?

i did consider the dyson ball, but then i saw how small the dirt bucket was i thought its not worth spending more for something thats smaller and has less suction...

My mother nicked my Henry. Great for heavy duty work whilst renovating.

I prefer a bagless though as I can never be arsed to buy bags.

my flat is only small and only 2 rooms have proper carpet so it didn't really seem a problem for me, and it's still probably bigger than the bag on my old vacuum. I guess it's a case of what's suitable for your own place.

Dyson for us. Worked brilliantly on the carpets in UK, and equally well on the tiled floors here in Portugal.

the battering our cleaner gets (6 big dogs) we need a decent one

the dyson has lasted pretty well tbh but i hear good things about miele too and the new vaxs.

bagless when you are emptying the cylender every day is a must fior us

I like my Dyson, we did have a problem with a bad bacterial cheesy smell coming from the filter. I couldn't get rid of it, I washed it a number of times. The thing that fixed it was AutoGlym odour eliminator
Now when I hoover the house smells like a new car.

I have a Vax. I think there's something wrong with it though, it doesn't pick anything up. It smells like it wants to catch fire as well.

So, out of three vacuums (Dyson, Henry and Vax), I can't get on with any of them. I'm tempted by a Miele myself. The only problem is you have to buy bags :(

Miele cat & dog. So powerful you can't use it on it's most powerful setting. And much better than your Dysons.

I made the same 'erm no' face to my mother.

She looked at me and said clogged filter = no suction yeah?

Er yeah makes sense.

I was just going to buy a new vacuum instead of maintaining it as per the instructions which i never read and no longer know where I put them.

Mine still isn't working right though.

:D

yes, well friend supplied the hoover but no instruction manual

Maybe I'll have a look at it again

That is the one I bought after someone posted their Which-report-result-thingy on here and it is worth every single penny. I have also discovered that I can do the dusting with it so I am getting twice it's worth out of it.

Never liked the Dysons, have repaired my girlfriend's parents one twice now - the lead keeps going open circuit due to the crap stain relief design near the handle. Also i seem to suffer with instant asthma round there if they've just used it.

Got a Henry and it picks up anything that fits down the tube: wood shavings, money, small ornaments, stash, etc...

Posted on another thread but in case OP misses it

I've just gone and got me a Miele an hour ago (Model S5211 in sexy black ). Just been trying it out. Impossible to push if you have the vent shut as it's so powerful so just hoovered by dragging it :D

(It looks like the picture of Brix's one on the other thread)

Anyway, it beats the Henry hands down.

The Dyson is just as good except it doesn't work and it's far too heavy and cumbersome and lacks attachment tools.

I love my Miele

ETA: I've just realised as well there's no horrible smell left in the air which I get when we use the Henry

ETA again: and the cord is longer than Henry's which is the last thing I expected. I thought I'd have to be unplugging it all the time but didn't have to once

Mine's a bagless wonder from ASDA for £15.

I've had it for over a year and it does the job. Only thing is you have to empty it every 3 or so uses.

I have a Goblin 1400W compact vacuum cleaner going spare. Few years old but works.

Free to a Suburban to collect from Brixton/Camberwell area before I put it on the Recycle page.

*Bump*

I am so sick of my bloody Hoover upright that I am about to order a Dyson Animal upright.

The general opinion at work was go for a Dyson and on here they seem pretty popular. Anyone got a Dyson Animal, if so would you recommend it?

We had a Dyson Animal, and to be honest it wasn't much cop. Think it's still upstairs and only does the wooden bedroom floor now. The Kirby is used downstairs and is brilliant.

Am I the only person who has mentioned a Kirby on this thread? :hmm:

The Rolls Royce of vacuum cleaners. :)

I wish I'd saved up and bought a Miele. I got a Vax (it wasn't cheap either) and it's SOOOOO shit. It's constantly blocking when all I've hoovered up is tiny bits of dust, and emptying is a complete pain in the arse because you have to open a little flap rather than just turn the barrel upside down, so you always end up comedically covering yourself in grime after struggling with the sodding thing for 15 minutes.
