Recommend me a Tory / Lib Dem borough

Zachor, the borough you want (no corruption, no waste) doesn't exist. Not in this country anyhow. They're all spectacularly bad. (Though Hackney and Harringey have certainly raised the bar)

On the basis that the less money they extract from you, the less they can waste, may I suggest either Westminster or Wansworth for their very low council tax rates? Wandsworth is one of the lowest in the country, and their services don't suffer unduly from it. I've still seen them waste stupid amounts of money on useless projects that go to friends of friends, but that's just local government for you.

While not at all sympathising with the OP as such, is it not undeniable that a lot of LAs do waste quite a lot of dosh?

For instance, when I worked at Newham, the planning department was merged from two sections into one. One of the guys was made more or less irrelevant, but they couldn't get rid of him as he'd been there so long. He was on about 50k and all he did was sit in his own room playing games and stuff on the computer.

 :D

Yup that sounds like Newham. Also they gave an accountant over £25k and a pension just to fuck off because he uncovered a huge amount of mismanagement within one dept. Also Newham again the council slashed childrens leisure services and other stuff just to recover £1m that they had lost due to a very basic mistake on theri Millenium Festival - what happened is they set up a charity with the express aim of giving money to a private company who would run the Millennium Fest without checking that its illegal to use a charity like this under the Charities Act. To save the arse of the Cllr who made the decision (who is now an MP) they slashed funding to community groups and projects in deprived areas. Again in Newham they built an art centre with a) not enough seats to make it pay so it lost about £4k on ever performance but didn't allocate running costs only capital costs - and to pay for this they shut down the lively and vibrant Tom Allen Arts Centre.

So you can see why I'm a bit prejudiced against Labour councils.

Too expensive.

Is it? I live in LBH&F and it's only expensive if you live in Brackenbury Village, dahling, or some other gentrified area.

But why should the fact that the borough council is Tory or Lib Dem controlled be a reason for moving? You don't make sense...in fact, you're as mad as Mad Mel.

Yep...and look at Wandsworth and Westminster, both Tory controlled and both shite in different ways.

I've lived in shit filthy corruption ridden inefficient waste riddled Labour councils all my life and I fancy a change to something better.

You obviously haven't been paying much attention to the press in recent years or you'd have noticed the corruption in Westminster and Wandsworth - both Tory controlled boroughs.

Waste and corruption aren't the sole preserve of Labour controlled councils and it is disingenuous to suggest that it is.

Then again, you could always move to Elthorne: very little social housing; full of posh bastards and it's Tory controlled...but it's in Surrey. :D

I do know about the Wandsworth and Westminster scandals but seeing so much waste and corruption over the years in Labour boroughs (OK I know theya re not all like Newham and Harringey) has prejudiced me against thinking Labour boroughs are efficient. I've done my bit paying for these inefficient fuck ups and want to move where it is n't an inefficient fuck up.

This is what is commonly described as a one-sided, blinkered post. Congratulations! You've completely lost the plot. :D

Whats wrong with wanting to better yourself and your environment? Which is why I no longer want to live in corrupt labour one party states.

If that's how you think one "betters" oneself, then you really have lost the plot. Living in a Tory-controlled borough won't make you a better or, even, a nicer person. Tory-controlled boroughs are no worse or better than any other. I should know: I live in a Tory-controlled borough that was once a Labour-controlled borough. Is there a real, qualitative difference? No.

The answer of course if you want to improve your area and counter the corruption or faults as you see them is to get involved yourself - take a more active overview of council activities, maybe even stand for office?

Fuck me I tried that several times. Didn't work. the labour councillors stayed bought by who ever had bought them.
