If you want your £££ to stretch a little further, have a look at new world wines from Chile and Argentina. Malbec is probably my favourite from the Americas.
The problem with Old Worlds, in particular the French, is that they rely too much on reputation - therefore they mark up their prices. But if you want to take the gamble, check out their Burgandys and move upwards from there.
