Recomend a Vampire Film

Yep. Also Vampire Lovers, Vampire Circus and Twins of Evil all good Hammers from the same era. And I recently discovered Bloodsuckers from a simular stable.

In the same vein....... Count Yorga, Vampire; and Fearless Vampire Killers, by Roman Polanski.

Vampire fans may want to think about 'avin' a look at the C4 drama series Ultraviolet (complete with Jack "I'm not a very good serious actor" Davenport) as I thought it was an interesting and quite fun take on modern vampirism.
I thought it was total and utter crap and not very original either. But I'm definatley in the minority most people seem to agree with you.

Anyone else remember Frank Langella as the first sexy version of Dracula?

i remember that being a pretty scary version of dracula as well. doesn't get shown too often on telly unfortunately. think it's generally regarded as one of his best roles
there's also a very good bbc version of dracula which came out around the same time which is probably the closest on-screen version of the book

I'll add a vote for both versions of 'Nosferatu'.
The 1930 'Vampyr' by Carl Dreyer is also a beaut.
Of the all-out gothics I'd recommend:

Black Sunday (1960 aka: Mask of Satan): brilliantly atmospheric b&w Italian film from Mario Bava and starring the wonderful Barbara Steele;

Fearless Vampire Hunters (aka Dance of the Vampires): someone already mentioned this Polanski film. It's one of the most atmospheric of all despite being a comedy.

Dracula - Prince of Darkness. My personal favourite of the Hammer Chris Lee Drac series.

Dracula (1931). Because Bela Lugosi is superb and so are the scenes in Transylvania. Sadly the rest of the film is like watching a stage play. The Mexican version shot on the same sets is much better but doesn't have Lugosi.

Dracula's Great Love. A Spanish film from the 1970's starring the prolific Paul Nashy. It's dreamlike, spooky and erotic. Sometimes mislabeled as a soft-porn film (it was released on video as 'Dracula's Virgin Lovers').

Vampyres: Directed by a Spaniard in England. Sexy!

Legendary Curse of Lemora. Low budget American film. 1973? A bit like an adult fairytale.

The films of Jean Rollin. He specialised in sexy vamps cavorting around French chateaus. Very atmospheric films with great locations. You won't mind that the plots are not up to much and the dialogue is dire. Best is 'Les Frissons des Vampires'.

That's enough! There are a dozens more I could recommend. There were some particularly good ones from Europe, Mexico and even the Philippines.

I#'m LOVING this thread!
Thanks for all the films all. Am gonna work my way through the ones I havent seen! Gawd I love Vamp. films me! :D

Lair of the White Worm - Ken Russell, therefore huge fun and slightly messed up in a tacky kind of way.

Also 'Shadow of the Vampire' - which is about the making of Nosferatu if the actor had actually been a vampire. And has Eddie Izzard in it.

used to have a decent porn version of dracula but the vampire maidens didn't use to suck the guys' necks dry for some reason

some great ones so far

I love the oldies the best, Nosferatu and Vampyr

nobody's mentioned The Addiction, which I loved, and which was referenced in that sugababes video freak like me, a much underrated film IMO

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112288/

I loved Blade and Blade II too for obvious reasons

Salems Lot, the original 70's version with David Soul and James Mason.

Nosferatu, the 20's version

Near Dark

The Lost Boys

Cronos was a superior film of the genre too

Cronos is a great film and has a different angle on the whole vampire thing.

There are some suggestions in this thread I hadn't heard of but must seek out.

(I didn't like Blade much)

Just imdb'ed it - Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey, 1932 (cough cough), not seen it so big thanks for the mention.
FVH is quite incredible, but possibly too dated for younger viewers.

Definitely Near dark, and also Nadja, about a female vampire wandering around New York. With a cameo by David Lynch.

Nadja! I'd forgotten about Nadja! Great film. b&w.

Nadja was of course the title of a book by Andre Breton about a woman he met called Nadja. I have read the book and have seen the film but years apart. There is absolutely no realation to the book's storyline or characters and the film. But I have always wondered if parts of the dialogue in the film are taken from the book as theystruck me as I saw the film as being a little Bretonesque... I guess not but

Somewhere I have an old video of Nosferatu, it's a 1930's movie and it's bloody scary for it's time.

1921

It is scary. A female virgin in her white nightdress entices the count in to her bedroom to taste of her blood (only the blood of a virgin would do). She risks sacrificing herself in order to save her fiance from the clutches of the count and traps the enraptured count in her bedroom as sunlight streams in....

Beginnings:

Early silent films (are they available?)
Vampire of the Coast (1909)
The Vampire's Trail (1910)
The Vampire (1913)--Kalem film directed by Robert Vignola.
In the Grip of the Vampire (1913)
Vampires of the Night (1914)--Greene's Feature Photo Plays.
The Vampire's Trail (1914)--directed by Robert Vignola.
Vampires of Warsaw (1914)
The Vampire's Tower (1914)--Ambrosia film.
Saved From the Vampire (1914)
The Devil's Daughter (1915)
A Fool There Was (1915)--Theda Bara as predatory "Vamp."
The Vampire's Clutch (1915)--Knight film.
Was She A Vampire? (1915)--Universal film.
Kiss of the Vampire (1915)
Mr. Vampire (1916)
A Night of Horror (1916)--German film directed by Arthur Robison.
A Vampire Out of Work (1916)--Vitagraph film.
A Village Vampire (1916)
The Beloved Vampire (1917)
The Vampire (1920)--Metro film.
Drakula (1921)
The Blond Vampire (1922)

Then the silent classics:
Nosferatu. 1921. Germany. d F W Murnau *****
A female virgin in her white nightdress entices the count in to her bedroom to taste of her blood (only the blood of a virgin would do). She risks sacrificing herself in order to save her fiance from the clutches of the count and traps the enraptured count in her bedroom as sunlight streams in....

Twins of Evil. 1971 ***** Peter Cushing is excellent as fanatical witch burning puritan, Uncle Gustav looking after two orphaned twins who become vampires. The twins are played by Mary and Madleine Collinson, the first identical twins to have a Playboy centrefold. Apparently.
Dracula AD 1972. 1972. *** Lee/Cushing. Lee didn't approve of the modern setting where Chelsea teenagers bring forth Dracula from his grave during a black magic ritual. "The count is back with an eye for London's hot pants, and a taste for everything!"

The Addiction is missing from that list

Some people thought it pretentious, a lot of the dialogue is reflections on philosophy and the nature of evil, but the B&W shots are beautifully composed, the acting is incredible and, if you enjoy the philosophical musings, it's a truly great film.

There's also the brilliant and truly frightening graduation scene, as later referenced in the nightclub scene in Blade and the Freak Like Me Video.

It was shot in just 20 days too!

Never heard of it. There's bound to be loads missing.

I have a copy of Jean Rollin's Le Viol du Vampire that I missed off too. 1968 bw. A melodrama in two parts. It was made as a short but was expanded. A problem with that is that much of the cast die at the end of the short and so are then brought back to life. "A masterpiece of the bizaare, mixing blood, a naked woman in a convertable, coffins and some fencing, semi-naked nymphs in a fragmented melee." Actually the 'nymphs' are wearing see through nighties and are fencing in front of a bonfire and the woman vampire in the convertable is not completely naked.

Edit to add: I got sidetracked by the naked women, and forgot to say that the reason I mentioned Le Viol... is because the film supposedly mixes existentialism and vampirism too.

I always had a soft spot for The Hunger.

Partly because of the opening scene with Bauhaus, partly because David Bowie was in it, but mostly because Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon lez it up big time.

( :o  )

Night Watch - a new Russian one has had some good things said about it. Whether it is actually any good I don't know.
Nochnoy Dozor is absolutely fantastic and laughs in the face of countless plastic American efforts.

(What does Night Watch get in the imdb?
6.3 (/10)
Fucking Yanks.   )

Miyu, Vampire Princess, if anime counts
The Lost Boys

Blade I and II were both utter, utter shite. How anybody can claim to enjoy sitting through these poorly acted, cheesey human rights violations of films is quite beyond me.
