Recent films that have surprised you?

Death at a Funeral. Thought it was gonna be classic brit flick shit, but surprisingly funny at times.

TBH I didn't watch Shawshank Redemption until it came on TV, goodness me! I missed that one, superb of course.

you're not the only one ;)

IIRC that film didnt do well at the cinema at all. It was only after, through word of mouth, that it became really popular...

Sweeny Todd. We went to it tonight. I did look it up, but didn't realise it was a musical - the reviews all said it was based on a musical, but didn't say that it remained one. I do like some musicals, but they're difficult to do right; this one didn't do it right, IMO.

Aside from that, every main actor was sleepwalking through their parts as if they;d been called up to play them unexpectedly and just went with what they'd done before.. Johnny Depp was playing the bastard lovechild of Edward Scissorhands and his version of Willy Wonka, raised by Jack Sparrow. Basically, odd, but pretty. Timothy Spall was playing a human toad. Alan Rickman was paternal and eeevil. Helena Bonham-Carter was bonkers.

And then there was Snow White sewing in a window, singing about birds - intentional, I'm sure, but so irrelevant that the film didn't even bother to mention whether she and her Prince Charming escaped.

Punch Drunk Love caught me off guard. Also the 40 Year Old Virgin / Knocked-Up movies - much funnier and actually more intelligent than I expected

I quite enjoyed the latter two movies - nothing life-changing, but good fun for when you want to watch something that isn't life-changing, and very well acted. Maybe I'll try Punch Drunk Love, in that case.

A series of unfortunate events, not that recent but surprisingly wonderful. An ideal antidote to Harry cuntsock Potter.

I think I've seen that film about five times now. Once was with a class (they advertised the film very well by having a secondary-school-aged based writing contest based on ASOUE, with lesson plans and everything, which were a good basis to build on), at least twice with my daughter, and once on my own. The kids in it are astounding - I don't know why they didn't win any big awards.

I just this second finished really enjoying it.

JESUS BALLS

juno is OK just OK

there is notjing remarkable or specail about this slow paced slow witted attempt at kooky comedy. Ghost world also was pretty dull.

The reason Juno is good is cos if you've watched Hard Candy its fucking awesome to think that Hayley is Juno :D

The Invasion- the 2007 remake of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It got universally panned but I thought it was actually pretty watchable.

Goes to show how little people know... :p

The Killing Floor, dragged along to watch it and pleasantly surprised.. but... why didn't he just turn the lights on... guy rents an apartment in NY.. it has history... gruesome and spooky. from the personal assistant, the neighbour, the policeman and the son of the last owner.

But, fabulous three story apartment, pool the lot but .. bodies pile up and stress begins to tell.. some nice touvhes but the film noir does not dictate .. Oh, for the light switch. , .

The Cast, Marc Blucas, very much a Danial Craig style looka like, Shiri Appleby, Reiko Aylesworth and John Bedford Lloyd, very much a low budget but achieved lots with little. Money, that is
