Sweeny Todd. We went to it tonight. I did look it up, but didn't realise it was a musical - the reviews all said it was based on a musical, but didn't say that it remained one. I do like some musicals, but they're difficult to do right; this one didn't do it right, IMO.
Aside from that, every main actor was sleepwalking through their parts as if they;d been called up to play them unexpectedly and just went with what they'd done before.. Johnny Depp was playing the bastard lovechild of Edward Scissorhands and his version of Willy Wonka, raised by Jack Sparrow. Basically, odd, but pretty. Timothy Spall was playing a human toad. Alan Rickman was paternal and eeevil. Helena Bonham-Carter was bonkers.
And then there was Snow White sewing in a window, singing about birds - intentional, I'm sure, but so irrelevant that the film didn't even bother to mention whether she and her Prince Charming escaped.
Punch Drunk Love caught me off guard. Also the 40 Year Old Virgin / Knocked-Up movies - much funnier and actually more intelligent than I expected
I quite enjoyed the latter two movies - nothing life-changing, but good fun for when you want to watch something that isn't life-changing, and very well acted. Maybe I'll try Punch Drunk Love, in that case.
A series of unfortunate events, not that recent but surprisingly wonderful. An ideal antidote to Harry cuntsock Potter.
I think I've seen that film about five times now. Once was with a class (they advertised the film very well by having a secondary-school-aged based writing contest based on ASOUE, with lesson plans and everything, which were a good basis to build on), at least twice with my daughter, and once on my own. The kids in it are astounding - I don't know why they didn't win any big awards.
