the only film that really competes is Requiem for a Dream in terms of leaving you properly fucked psychologically,

you see it just doesnt do that to me, although others have said "you must watch it sober, in daylight and when you feel mentally stable" and tbh i think its a great film but it didnt need that hype.

But, if you want to read something scary have a go at reading this guys journal. Its quite long and slow at the start but try and read it in a oner, alone, at night. Its scary because it true.

Hmmm... (SPOILER)

It's a bit suspicious that he left a link that doesn't work at the end. Bit of a give-away, but quite nice all the same.

In The Mouth Of Madness shit me up a lot but the only film that's made me jump out of my seat is Seven, when that dead dude sits up.

I saw The Evil Dead once, many many years ago, and I shat my pants. Perhaps if I watched it again today I'd think it's pants, but it remains the film that has scared/disturbed me the most.

Can't think of many others that have frightened me much... I actually found The Exorcist funny at places.

First time I watched Jacob's Ladder I was terrified. Had to keep leaving the room. But I had had a bit of a bad trip a couple of weeks before and was very stoned whilst watching it.

The Audition is one of my favorite Japanese films!!!

Although it didnt so much scare me as freak me out!

One of the most disturbing films I've watched... ever. And my girlfriend can do that creepy bloody noise she makes when she gets all those goddam needles out..........

Havent felt like that in ages - cheers!

Urotsokujo (Legend of the Overfiend) freaked me out no end, but more because of the disturbingly casual attitude towards brutal rape and misogyny. Not a horror film, I know, but really quite a fucked up film.

The Exorcist, and the 2nd sequel (the sequence with the headless statue is highly effective).

Salem's Lot (recent thread on it) was dead scary, when I watched it as a kid (still love it).

Alien/s.

Event Horizon shit me right up, at the cinema.

Can't believe no one has mentioned The Shining... redrum! and as for the creepy twin sisters  so many things about that film that are superb, all work and no play makes jack a dull boy

actullay urotsukidoji is a horror film ... it's more and more dubious sequal became more porn like but the original was ment to stand alone as a horror with all the brutality in it

a review by Hentai Neko

Yeah, not strictly horror but I found that Korean revenge flick 'OldBoy' pretty disturbing.

Some very sick minds at work there...

The Others
Dark Water (Japanese)

i thought the others was boring.
dark water had that increasing sense of dread that ringu had, but ringu delivered in a much scarier way.

not disagreeing just what i thought

See I actually found Dark Water scarier than Ringu...

they are the masters of that style the japanese. no way i could watch the american versions of those two. couldn't build up that atmospheric / impending doom stuff. it's all too rushed and instant gratifycation like

But it's not true, is it.

Good fun though, cheers.

Agreed, I wouldn't go anywhere near the American versions...

Definately would second Event Horizon, possibly the creepiest film I have ever seen. Not many horror films scare me either. Blair Witch project gave me nightmares though, quite surprised not many people find it scary. The Shining is the only other film I found very scary at all.
