English team? I wanted the team which started the match with two Englishmen to defeat the team which had none.

Really? i wanted the team whose players had more vowels in their surnames to defeat the team whose players had less.

the biggest shock of the night was seeing Ronaldo huffing and puffing about like my Dad having a kickabout.
Unfortunately that ceased to be a novelty (let alone a shock) for Madrid fans a long, long time ago.

So. Arsenal beat Real Madrid by a one goal difference.
They also beat Cardiff by a one goal difference.
So we must surely be as good as, err, Real Madrid then, no?

;)

Talking of which whatever happened to Inter Cardiff? :D

 you feeling alright chief? ;)

who have Totteringham got then?

oh no don't be daft.

I know, I know, I've even baffled myself with my posting but........ I'm Genuinely impressed with that performance. I started off watching with Mrs Chieftain (a Gooner) and thought (hoped in a small way if Im honest) that you'd get battered, but no..... I even found myself thinking "come on hold onto your lead" at the last as you played well and battled hard...

THAT comming from a Spud is saying something...cheers Cheif'!!

But it's not over yet only half time.

Bet your Mrs was chuffed.

Eboue was superb. Despite a few errors, the Arsenal defence was excellent. I think Reyes' performance was overrated a bit. He improved in the 2nd half, but wasted a lot of possession in the first.

What was striking about Real was the lack of passion, and that includes their supporters. It was if they were all there out of obligation.

That's down to Wenger putting five in midfield, and the high tempo from the start, excellent tactics.

[/pipedream/] Now if only Prem' clubs would just give The Arsenal that amount of time on the ball[/pipedream/]

i don't understand it. that was a totally different real madrid from the last couple of weeks, particularly the blistering start against zaragoza in the cup at the bernabeu. maybe they were all tired, and the spririt of juanito hadn't been properly invoked.
let's see what happens in the second leg.

Did anyone else notice the banner that was raised briefly behind Real's goal early in the first half. It said 'Hail Victory'. Now, translate that into German...I know the Ultras Sur are supposed to be right wing, but that's a bit dodgy, surely?

I told you Ronaldo was fat :D The only worry now woudl be a 1-0 lead isn't much when Real have plenty of quality...esp with such a young Arsenal team - will they feel the pressure at home?

I suspect Real will have a major re-think...drop Ronaldo and play Cassano up front playing off Baptista.

Of course Real only need to do as well as West Ham did at Highbury (i.e. win 3-2) and they'd be through on goal difference :D

Watching this match tonight made me wonder if Wenger isn't playing a really canny game this season. He would've realised when getting rid of Vieira that he had no chance of winning the Premiership this season, and so the Champs League offered a much easier route to success (forget the domestic cups, they mean nothing). Think about it: for a start, there are far fewer games to play in the CL, in the 1st round English teams are almost certain to qualify unless they get an awful draw (and Arsenal definitely got a very favourable one), and Arsenal are more suited to playing continental style football than they are playing against most Premiership teams, esp. away from home. Add to that the fact that the Chumps Lg is the thing that Arsenal covet most, and - to me at least - it all adds up.

That's pretty much my blokes theory.

Really not sure what I'm doing in the sports forum! :D
I enjoyed the game last night.

Yes, I saw that. I couldn't make any real sense of it due to tiredness. It's a strange choice of words - either the best that couild be done in a foreign language, or more sinister as you suspect.

With Tottenham 4th in the league and Arsenal playing well in Europe what are the chances of another Liverpool/Everton scenario happening !

Look, let's not get ahead of ourselves. It was one 0-1 win. We don't know whether this was a blip or the start of an Arsenal renaissance yet.

Wenger doesn't have some masterplan to fail in the prem and win the CL. Considering one's a league and the other's a knockout tournament (with a lot more luck/chance involved), it would be stupid to concentrate on the CL. On top of that the only thing that might persuade Thierry to stay is CL football next year. We're far more likely to get that through gaining a qualification place or a direct entry into the CL from the prem.

Great game too! Only slightly marred by the ungentlemanly spectacle of one of the Real players (I forgot who) attempting to bundle the injured Pires back over the touchline. That was ridiculous.

Another thing I don't get is the way teams play the first leg as if it was the whole thing, i.e. Real throwing all their men forward in desperation and Arsenal sitting back. It's a 180-minute game!

That was Reyes wasn't it?

Why did Reyes roll back onto the pitch in the first place??
