Real Madrid - Arsenal

I only saw the second half. Did Hleb do anything in the first half then? I mostly saw him failing to control the ball properly.

Can't remember whether it was in the first half, but he definitely embarassed Real quite a few times with some incredibly acute turns.

Except that if they don't win it they might miss out on it next season.
Which of course is true, but they might as well go for broke and concentrate their efforts and resources on winning the biggest prize. After all, it worked for Liverpool last season.

Shame they didn't have a single player from England in the starting line up though.

But that's $$$ European football for you, innit?

oi! be careful your petite bourgeois parochialism is beginning to show through. ;)

though perhaps you have a point, the "Volk" is being diluted by all the Johnny Foreigners winning their affections with crafty footwork. :p

P.S. The fact Madrid had more English players and Arsenal don't says quite abit about English players. :D

Really good game, best in Eurocup season thus far.

A win for the Arse is a win for common sense, anyway... one of the only UK top flight teams not owned by dodgy foreign businessmen.

A defeat for Real Madrid is a defeat for the likes of Mr Posh Spice.

It's all good, baby.

Up the Arse!

That was one of the best games I have seen in a long while. It was so refreshing to see some proper, fast attacking football played on the deck, what with the Premiership going down the Bolton route of pack the midfield, lump it forward and see if you can injure someone.

Highlights for me:

- Reyes putting in the kind of performance that he's best at...basically taking the piss out of his opposing number. Did you see how fucked off Cicinho got?

- Fabregas and Hleb running things in midfield. The former showed brilliant vision and passing while the latter was just magnificient to watch, those turns, that control!

- Our makeshift defence putting in a great performance. OK, so Flamini continually got pulled out of position but he always recovered. Lehmann was incredible, Senderos played better, Toure turned it on; but Eboue...words fail me, he looks to be one of the best acquistions we'ved made in a while. So athletic, so skillful and he put the work in too.

- Henry doesn't turn up for big games? Bugger off to all those blinkered idiots who think he's overrated.

But despite all that, I'm not deluding myself about the second leg. Real still have great players even if they don't always play for each other and as they say it's only half time...

btw Man of the Match - it's got be Cesc.

baron this is all very well and good and i'm sat here grinning after the first english team to win at the bernabeu EVER but....

god madrid were awful. henry's goal was superb but some teams would have out four past them tonight.

what you say is correct but the context makes it less sensational. a little bit of pessimism goes a long way. never expect. throwing my knickers at the bus coming down avenell road will be the first time i get optimistic

Is there really any reason to think that they'll suddenly improve in two weeks tho? Maybe there is, but I just don't see them adopting a Bolton-esque strategy to attempt to destabilise us, not when they're one-nil down already anyway.

I generally agree though. Can't take anything for granted and the return is going to be tough.

it's all about defense. they were superb tonight. they have to do it again in a few weeks time when god knows who the personnel will be. hopefully better but who knows.

the reason it's all about defense is because we haven't been good in front of goal. well we've been good in front of goal but not getting it in the goal. thank god terry henry thought tonight was enough of an occasion to turn it on and put it in the net. should have happened on three other occasions at least.

madrid are perfect for us.

the english league cottoned onto the fact that you can stop quality by kicking the shit out of it but hopefully europe hasn't yet.

if we get through and draw an english team i'll get down to nyon and do things

sorry so slow watching family guy :D

Bet you're spannered as well, while I'm sat here stone-cold sober rushing off the last few bits of my dissertation.

Yeah, god knows who the defence will be given the rate we've been crocking defenders at.

Thinking about what would be the ideal draw if we get through this, so as to aviod the shit kickers, IYSWIM?

I reckon Lyon would be a nice and realistic tie, maybe Villareal too.

i hate acronymns i can't understand.

sober as a judge actually. my george best impressions are wearing thin round these parts. funny the first time etc...

good night and good luck

football. the great leveller. :)

Speaking as a neutral...

well done to the Arsenal--excellent team performance. I had been worried at half-time that they weren't ahead, expecting a back-lash, but it never came.

Wenger deserves some success too, and it would be good if Arsenal's (past brilliant of a few seasons ago) football got at least a belated award.

Speaking as a Barca fan

It was nice to Real revert to form :D Still, it will mean nothing if they fuck up next week. But, it's both team's only chance of silverware so I expect some frantic action next week.

Real have never been the same team since they got rid of Makele...the balance went and Gravesen was neevr good enough to fill that role.

Still swimming in Egypt then (in de-Nile)?

I'm sorry, but isn't the point of the European Cup to find the best team in Europe? Now Liverpool, the current supposed holders of that title, haven't won their domestic league for 15 years and that isn't going to change this year. Surely the national leagues have to serve as qualifiers for the European Cup so forgive for thinking that the criteria have only been extended as far as they have (although only for certain countries I note) for the sole reason of money rather than glory. This is the top of a slippery slope to the dreaded European "super league" and the complete degredation of domestic competition, something already partially witnessed with the abolition of the Cup Winners' Cup.

And regarding Tottenham, in an ideal world I would rather see them in the UEFA Cup along with Liverpool and Manchester United but I concede that that ain't going to happen.
Yak Yak Yak...dont you Spuds ever tire of seeing your own verbose fonts....???

Although as I've said in another thread...Liverpools form was worse last year and they seemed to have pulled themselves through it....miracles happen.
My work here is done

Up The Gunners!!

much as it pains me, a fantastic performance and result for Arsenal. Have to agree with Donna about Hleb though, although admittedly I didn't watch the whole game.

the biggest shock of the night was seeing Ronaldo huffing and puffing about like my Dad having a kickabout. AND he wasn't taken off. G Force mentioned his size recently but i wasn't quite expecting that

Yeh...well cant have everything....at least we're owned by Englishmen.... ;)

But what a job...the FIRST English team to beat them at home....priceless. :D

indeed - just cautious in this weird old season!

:D

hopefully give the young lads a load of confidence an' all.

Too true, I think this is an exciting time, there are some class youngsters coming through, Eboue (who I thought played very well), Fabregas, Diaby, Walcote, Gilbert and of course Lupoli (watch him next season)

The future is bright.......

So. Arsenal beat Real Madrid by a one goal difference.
They also beat Cardiff by a one goal difference.
So we must surely be as good as, err, Real Madrid then, no?

;)

I told you Ronaldo was fat :D The only worry now woudl be a 1-0 lead isn't much when Real have plenty of quality...esp with such a young Arsenal team - will they feel the pressure at home?

I suspect Real will have a major re-think...drop Ronaldo and play Cassano up front playing off Baptista.

Real looked old.

Agree totally – they're a team of ageing "Galacticos" and the new players brought in to eventually replace them (Robinho, Baptista) don't look up to the job. I thought Roberto Carlos was their best player last night but that Ronaldo, Beckham and Zidane were piss poor.
