Except that if they don't win it they might miss out on it next season.

Which of course is true, but they might as well go for broke and concentrate their efforts and resources on winning the biggest prize. After all, it worked for Liverpool last season.Donna Ferentes said:Except that if they don't win it they might miss out on it next season.

But that's $$$ European football for you, innit?

Diamond said:That was one of the best games I have seen in a long while. It was so refreshing to see some proper, fast attacking football played on the deck, what with the Premiership going down the Bolton route of pack the midfield, lump it forward and see if you can injure someone.
Highlights for me:
- Reyes putting in the kind of performance that he's best at...basically taking the piss out of his opposing number. Did you see how fucked off Cicinho got?
- Fabregas and Hleb running things in midfield. The former showed brilliant vision and passing while the latter was just magnificient to watch, those turns, that control!
- Our makeshift defence putting in a great performance. OK, so Flamini continually got pulled out of position but he always recovered. Lehmann was incredible, Senderos played better, Toure turned it on; but Eboue...words fail me, he looks to be one of the best acquistions we'ved made in a while. So athletic, so skillful and he put the work in too.
- Henry doesn't turn up for big games? Bugger off to all those blinkered idiots who think he's overrated.
But despite all that, I'm not deluding myself about the second leg. Real still have great players even if they don't always play for each other and as they say it's only half time...
btw Man of the Match - it's got be Cesc.
Diamond said:Is there really any reason to think that they'll suddenly improve in two weeks tho? Maybe there is, but I just don't see them adopting a Bolton-esque strategy to attempt to destabilise us, not when they're one-nil down already anyway.
I generally agree though. Can't take anything for granted and the return is going to be tough.

Bet you're spannered as well, while I'm sat here stone-cold sober rushing off the last few bits of my dissertation.
Yeah, god knows who the defence will be given the rate we've been crocking defenders at.
Thinking about what would be the ideal draw if we get through this, so as to aviod the shit kickers, IYSWIM?
I reckon Lyon would be a nice and realistic tie, maybe Villareal too.

Still, it will mean nothing if they fuck up next week. But, it's both team's only chance of silverware so I expect some frantic action next week.Yak Yak Yak...dont you Spuds ever tire of seeing your own verbose fonts....???stavros said:Still swimming in Egypt then (in de-Nile)?
I'm sorry, but isn't the point of the European Cup to find the best team in Europe? Now Liverpool, the current supposed holders of that title, haven't won their domestic league for 15 years and that isn't going to change this year. Surely the national leagues have to serve as qualifiers for the European Cup so forgive for thinking that the criteria have only been extended as far as they have (although only for certain countries I note) for the sole reason of money rather than glory. This is the top of a slippery slope to the dreaded European "super league" and the complete degredation of domestic competition, something already partially witnessed with the abolition of the Cup Winners' Cup.
And regarding Tottenham, in an ideal world I would rather see them in the UEFA Cup along with Liverpool and Manchester United but I concede that that ain't going to happen.
My work here is doneiROBOT said:Although as I've said in another thread...Liverpools form was worse last year and they seemed to have pulled themselves through it....miracles happen.

editor said:So. Arsenal beat Real Madrid by a one goal difference.
They also beat Cardiff by a one goal difference.
So we must surely be as good as, err, Real Madrid then, no?

The only worry now woudl be a 1-0 lead isn't much when Real have plenty of quality...esp with such a young Arsenal team - will they feel the pressure at home?J77 said:Real looked old.
