yaaaay i am starving i ate me lunch at 11:30 today so cake is needed.

When i was younger i would lie behind the sofa and read for hours and hours, if i thought i wouldnt get stuck i would try that again

On the bus or the tube - I bike to work now and I miss it - I don't read nearly as much as I used to - I don't read in bed and my flatmate has the telly on all the time so it's hard to get the opportunity to read. :(

how come you don't read in bed OU?

I suffer from insomnia and have to reserve the bedroom for nothing but sleeping - so no telly, no eating, no reading, just sleeping, or more accurately, just tossing and turning

Does reading not help you sleep then?

If I'm tired reading makes me so drowsy, it's like I've taken a drug! My eyes go all weird and refuse to stay open - is this just me?

I love to read on the tube - I know it's not the perfect environment, there are lots of distractions, but the feeling of being in my little fictional bubble while this whirlwind of commuting commotion flows around me is beautiful. It's where I get most of my non-uni reading done as well, so it feels like a bit of a safe space - I don't feel guilty about not reading text books on the tube.
This describes how I feel about it perfectly. I also need music too, though.

I used to read whilst walking - you kind of have to when walking is your main way of getting around. It's not ideal though, I have to admit.

I have to say, reading tends to keep me awake, not make me sleep. But I still do it... I too suffer from insomnia, but haven't reached OU's level of dealing with it yet.

Well it's not me!

I sometimes stay awake for hours reading but if I'm actually rather tired it sends me to sleep.

I'm never tired at bedtime though, just at inappropriate times like at 3 in th afternoon or the early evening :(

Light lunches, heavy dinners - eat around 9pm

Ha, I thought you were laughing at me and my mumsy mode...

You could try eating lighter meals in the evening, a bit earlier to see if that makes any difference?

Me too. Although I've had to stop myself reading labour books before going to sleep :o

I have to set myself a limit though at the outset, like I'll read to page 90 or whatever. Or I'll still be there at 3am. I have never dozed off reading.

My preferred environment is on my sofa, endless cups of tea, shortbread biscuits, a cat or two, a Bach fugue and pissing rain outside.

This is a tough one - I used to be able to read in most places, but now I need to create the right environment and atmosphere. At the moment bed is working best for me, with curled up on the sofa coming second. I don't read so well if the place is messy, and I can't read if the tv is on. I used to be able to read with music in the background, but now that is rare - I find it too distracting.

I've tried that - I just get hungry and yearn cheese.

Anyway, this thread's about reading and I'm surprised no-one's yet said that it is a horrible place and certainly not a favoured environment

Yeah I have to say, I much prefer the tube/sofa, to reading in bed.
Or a nice comfy armchair. Bed's uncomfortable for reading.

That's absolutely mine as well. Although really, I prefer a comfy chair to the sofa. But the rain outside and a cat is really the essential part. But only if the cat will just stay on my lap rather than try to get between me and the book.

I do also read in bed every night. I'm still working on teaching my bf that "I'm going to bed" and "I'm going to sleep" are NOT the same things. I go to bed, and then around 30 minutes later, I go to sleep.
