Re-introduce national service, join a European Army?

Solve the refugee crisis and European army problem in one fell swoop by offering European citizenship for 5 years military service to those arriving on Europe’s southern shores
Once you've served in the French Foreign Legion for three years, you can apply for French citizenship so 🤷‍♀️.

ETA Ah, see LDC got in there first.

Looking back at WW2, it appears that conscription affected men as old as 51, which made me shudder a bit but I have passed that milestone. But I guess we are a very different country demographically now. We can't exactly afford to lose our already dwindling reserve of youngsters.

How about fight back?
I mean if attacked...someone has to, or maybe not depending on whether you consider what you have worth fighting for
If Britain was invaded I would probably fight but we are not talking about that we're talking about another country being invaded. We do have a professional army they are employed to fight wars. If our leaders decided that our army should be used to defend others then so be it.

Yeah, when my Grandfather's occupation was eventually removed from the reserved list in 1942 he was 35; he always said that on the training and landing boats he felt like a father figure to the young boys he was with. 51 is quite shocking, really.

The youngsters turning 18 today only know a time of austerity as the governments their parents and grandparents elected have destroyed the social contract they themselves benefitted from.

Someone aged 35 has spent their entire working life within the ongoing fallout of the global financial crisis and increasing inequality

I don’t think they should be asked to give their lives for a nation that has treated them like shit. What exactly are they fighting for?

Whereas the British people who fought in the Second World War grew up in a time of prosperity…

This time round we’ll seize the commanding heights of the economy and the top 200 monopolies before we give the guns, tanks and planes back….
Might be academic given

A poll from the Times released on Monday discovered far less alarming views, such as that most gen Zers aren’t proud to be British and only one in 10 would fight for their country – findings which were framed as shocking to Times readers.

Interesting idea, who off the forum would be Captain Mainwaring?
Private Sponge for me loitering safely in the background in every episode and outliving most of the more prominent members of the cast. Or the vicar for similar reasons

The King and Country Debate debate on 9 February 1933 at the Oxford Union Society. The motion presented, "That this House will under no circumstances fight for its King and country", passed with 275 votes for the motion and 153 against it. Didn’t survive contact with Hitler’s Germany.

We would need to do an audit as I think Militant initially called for the nationalisation of the top 350 companies but then due to mergers adjusted the figure to 250 but that was reduced to 200.

It deffo ended up as the top 200…

So first we kick the shit out of Putin’s kleptocracy then we build a land fit for heroes back here. It’ll all be over by Christmas…

Perhaps the chance to fight under the European flag will inspire a young generation of soldiers

And if f we really want to re- create the spirit of post-war reconstruction we could invite Russia to join the EU and make their economy stronger than it was before the war.

has made some here consider whether they would fight?
You know when all the rock ribbed, mighty thewed and granite jawed heroes have failed to secure victory and the generals whose once steely eyes are now triple bagged and dead say 'scour the prisons and madhouses! Round up the idlers and the insufficiently elderly!' Thats when they're coming to me and its also a certain sure for real sign that the war is already lost. Whatever it was about.
