Raw format

jeff_leigh

What happened to Dubversion ?
is the Raw format universally recognised now? i know different camera makes have there own version like canon uses CR2 but what i mean is if i was travelling in Thailand and wanted to go into an Internet Cafe and get them to write my images to disk would i be able to shoot in Raw or would i have to shoot in Jpeg?
thanks jeff

Absolutely no reason why an internet cafe couldn't burn exact copies of your files to disc. The file format isn't exactly a 'universal standard' but, that shouldn't cause a problem.

There are moves to standardise a RAW file format for output consistency within the industry. The problem is that new formats seem to be developed just as all the big industry players have established a standard.

Rather than burn to CD you could just upload files to an external server from an internet cafe if the bandwidth is fast enough.

and a lot safer than burning to disc..especially if you propose to use a CD-RW(issues of cross-machine compatability of reading and writing) let alone the possiblity of physically losing said discs if they are just plain CD-Rs.

would the cafe allow me to use a USB cable to download my images onto thier hard drive then upload to an external server? and can you recommend any external servers i'll need at least 20gig

have you ever been to an internet cafe before? have you got a computer? have you looked to see if there are any resources on the Inturnip to see if such a facilty is available?

If you have 20gb, your best bet will be to write them to CDs. Just bear in mind that they are easily damaged!

You will very likely find an internet cafe that can do this, though not all of them will.

what if you lose or damage them before you even get to burn images onto them?

what if you can't find an Internet cafe that will allow you to use a USB cable?

what if you find an Internet cafe that won't let you burn discs?

what if you find an internet cafe that won't let you do either/or?

why do people use internet cafes abroad?

Aless the internet cafe has at least 25mb sdsl(they can upload/download at the same speed) broadband ,20gb is going to take too long to upload. I have 2mb broadband and it takes arbout 45minutes to download 600mb at the fastest.

Why are people negative regarding burning cds/dvds, as long as you verify that the data has been copied it should be compatible. Ive read cdr created from many diffrent burners without a problem. they only reason is might not work is if you burn the data on a system that has a different filesystem to what you use at home.

Even though i use linux, i make sure when i burn cds/dvds that anybody can read them afterwards.....

i wasn't intending uploading 20gig in on go but in 1gig batches everyday that being the size of my cameras card

what you mean by filesystem, do you meaning operating system? sorry bit of a technophobe :)

a filesystem is a database , its how the operating system organises data, decides how long file names should be, how much space for each file, file structure, there is alot more to it than that, i am just noting the basics, if you just use windows then the cd/dvd will be able to be read anywhere

yeah i just use Windows and expect the internet cafes do also thanks

yeah bosky my first thread Raw format was started to enquire whether or not the Raw format was universal and would it be a problem writing said format to disc, then Stanley Edwards gave me the idea of uploading files to an external server so i started this thread to ask about web storage options :)

One other thought.

There are other devices out there like the Disk Steno that allow you to write your camera's memory card to CD or DVD.

Mail the disk(s) home. Do the same with a backup copy if you don't trust the post. No need to worry what facilities will be available at a random Internet Cafe in Thailand.

Job done. :)
