Railway Walks

A lovely walk in west Wales this week. From Dolgellau, just on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, along the estuary to Barmouth on the west coast. It's about 9 miles each way and it's a lovely way to spend a day walking there in the morning then heading back in the late afternoon. Then a pint or two and some fish & chips in Dolgellau. :)

I like the railway walks, but Richard Wilson (Victor Meldrew) on the series Britain's Best Drives does show what can be achieved with a better presenter for this sort of thing.

I am half tempted to go to Barmouth on the train tomorrow, but it will take 4 and a half hours each way so its a bit silly for a daytrip really.

Episode 3 now available on BBC iPlayer

I missed that one but I'm not going to catch it on iplayer as I'm unlikely to do a Cornish walk. I saw the first two and I really want to do the Derbyshire walk soon. I'll do the Wales too at some time I hope.
I don't have any feelings about the presenter one way or the other, I just like to find out about the walks and maybe do them if they aren't too far away.

This week it's Scotland Shirl, so maybe not for you. A walk along part of the Speyside Way between Craigellachie and Ballindaloch.

Now on iPlayer

Thanks for the iPlayer reminder. I'm back at college on Monday nights now so missed it last night. I will watch the Scotland one, with any luck a chance to get up there may come along.
We found (but didn't walk) a railway walk from Robin Hoods Bay to Scarborough a couple of weeks ago, I'm going to go back and walk it in May sometime.

It was like an advert for the Scottish tourist board sponsored by the whisky companies. I love walking. I love old railways. I love history. But this show is awful.

I'm hoping to get up to Scotland and do some walking this year..
The walk to Scarborough sounds really good. Is it skirting around the coast, or do you go inland as well?

It certainly starts off skirting the coast and I'm guessing it does all the way but I don't know for sure. That coast is really dramatic but the moorland over there is pretty stunning too. I was hoping it might feature in the Railway Walks but I'm going to walk it in May whatever.

Well you sound determined to do it, and I'd love to know how it goes. It's a shame we don't have a walking/hiking or general outdoorsy forum here.

It's too formulaic - I imagine the BBC buy it in for a very reasonable price.

There was a time when all programmes were as predicatble as this.

Not been around because I was checking out a railway walk that has become the High Peak trail :)

Biked along that last week, nice views, especially about half way down where the line travels along two raised embankments. Way more interesting than the Tissington Trail whic is stuck in a hollow for most of the way. Think I'll try the Longendale one sometime soon.

Yep I think you should do that.

For anyone else who missed it (editor?) this weeks walk started in Weymouth:
The backstreets of Weymouth seem an unlikely spot to explore railway history, but Julia discovers there was once a short railway that ran south from Weymouth and across the unique coastal features of Chesil Beach and Portland. The walk is the ideal platform for learning about the history of Portland Harbour and the tied isle's most famous export, Portland stone.

Still available on BBC iPlayer

was walking through Manchester Piccadilly yesterday and there was a poster up advertising a walk along the top of the Ribblehead viaduct, end of July - you had to book tickets in advance to do it and I think there was a charge - just looked on internet to see if there are any more details but can't find them yet, back in Manchester next week so will look again then
