Railton Rd

Its part of the long talked about HH regeneration, which plans to close off bits of railton and reroute the traffic around the Poets Corner side of HH junction - there's some stuff on http://www.hernehillsociety.org.uk/ and specifically here http://tinyurl.com/23nzql, which uses the criminal word "holistic".

The first I noticed of it were people living in Rymer Road with complaint posters in their windows as I guess it'll increase traffic on their street. However that was just at the consultation stage, so I'm not sure whether it'll happen or not.

Yours, Possibly Misinformed Herne Hillite.

edit - proposed reversal of the traffic flow on Rymer, by Huffy's, who (allegedly) still haven't moved the fridge they dumped around the corner on Christmas Eve.

Thats true, the lighting is shit but if the residents insist on 'period' style lamposts its there own fault.

The wealthy bastards.

I doubt it. Wouldn't surprise me if half of those houses were Housing Trust and others were converted into flats.

No doubt some of them are own the WHOLE house outright though

The wealthy bastards

Some residents definately pushed for the old style lamposts. The fact that they don't really work makes me think fuck em.The new solar lamposts that went up everywhere else would have looked fine and given off plenty of light.

Who's that's nimby poster who always goes on about Josephine? If it wasn't about frightfully mah-vellous 'Urban Art Fairs' then it was moaning about planning permission being granted for a new block of flats on the site of Anastasi's cafe/garage.

Really, I tried to leave my preconceptions behind, but when someone's trying to preserve an old cafe (as if ever they used it!) based on the approach that it would affect the architecture and 'character of the neighbourhood then it's difficult to feel sympathy. OK, so it may have been opposite Josephine, but they were undistinguished Victorian structures in poor condition, already sandwiched between housing estate blocks and facing what looks to be a derelict hairdresser's outhouse.

FWIW I'd have liked to see the cafe survive, just not on that ridiculous reasoning. And besides, by all reports, all concerned with the garage did pretty well - South London has a few new garages as a result of the developers' money.

I'd have liked to have seen anastasi open never mind survive. They only ever seemed to be open for ten minutes on a tuesday afternoon or something weird like that.

A slight exaggeration in my experience.

I don't think so.....! My place faces the corner of Brixton Hill & Josephine Ave.. I don't see 8am very often but they are there just about every night, right through until at least 4-5am. There was a spell a few months ago where it eased off a bit, but it's back to normal now. Seems to be mostly different (and very much louder) girls though.

yep, and my friend lived on that house on the corner of Josephine and Brixton Hill (the one that was scaffolded up for ages with the great big gardens on the front of the Hill). I believe they got those gardens cut down because all the prostitutes were bringing their clients into them.

My friend had the basement, ground floor and first floor but used the basement as his front door. There were condoms by the basement front door practically every day

Whereas the only people to be seen by Hamiltons on Railton Road last night were two slightly Clapham types girls wearing Ugg boots. Staff of Life and the place next door don't seem to be open that often lately.

Also it's worth bearing in mind the mythology (wherever you live) that where you live now is better and pastures new are scarier...I've lived on estates in Brixton for 26 years now and the the tenants always regard the estate down the road as being more lawless....

I think that's true everywhere in the world.... so which estate is regarded as more lawless than yours? The Loughborough?

i'm moving to josephine ave from horsford road at the end of the month

horsford rd is really nice, the was a small crack den type thing a while ago, but it didn't really cause that much trouble..all things considered

i do not know which is more preferable, crack which admittedly sometimes did tempt whores into our road...or just straight up whoring?

I've spent four years in a fairly downmarket bit of Vauxhall. That was genuinely grim.

Compared to that Coldharbour lane for three years has been pretty laid back - excepting a flooding, an attack on my front door with a flowerpot, occasionally being threatened and my partner being chased by a crackhead.

Just by the Brockwell Lido, where I'm now living, is pretty much the most upmarket place I've ever lived. It's a slightly disturbing change - I've not been offered anything illegal or seen shouting in the streets for days. :D

Well any time there are kids being anti-social on Moorlands people always say they're from Guinness Trust.....

Spoilt for choice, eh. How the other half lives . . . .

Haha! Its all wife swapping and bitter family feuds around there. You won't have heard of the three bodies found dumped in the park in the last month then? Pub gossip is my only source, as I've not been in the park that much recently, so can't add to Editors' selection of yellow police boards.

I did have some bloke throwing golf ball sized rocks at me whilst I cycled through Vauxhall yesterday.

Going north along past the Portuguese bit of South Lambeth Road, next to the (peabody?) housing block, tbh, couldn't work out whether he was throwing them specifically at me, or just hurling them as hard as he could into the shops on the other side of the street, but a couple of them whilstled past as I lumbered along.

Bit alarming either way!

Normally quite quiet up here...

Couldn't agree more. I normally spend my cycle along that bit either battling against the constant headwind or mulling over a conversation I once had with a taxi driver who insisted that the old BT on the left houses a duplicate set of listening / satelite devices for the MI6... admittedly it does look suspiciously empty until you see the top floors.

Mysterious place, many are the rumours....

Aye that's the one. We seem to have managed to divert the topic away from the relative merits of Railton and Josephine with a good conspiracy theory!
